Today Oriol Romeu has signed for Southampton on a three-year deal for a fee of around £5m and it was from out of nowhere. I believe that Chelsea have really missed a trick here!
In modern football, defensive midfielders are priceless and for the most part, few and far between. Ever since Claude Makekele came to Chelsea and changed the the way we approached the game from that moment, that holding midfield position has become instrumental in every single formation played out across the globe.
Oriol Romeu broke into the Chelsea team when Andre Villas-Boas brought him in to replace John Obi Mikel and at the time he was like a breath of fresh air!
We were so used to Mikel being so strong in the defensive side of his game but with the ball at his feet he was lacking. Time and time again Chelsea supporters would moan and groan in the stands and watching worldwide when they would see him slow out play down and move the backwards or sideways.
Romeu came in and immediately showed us all what we had been missing. We signed him from Barcelona, a product of their famous Academy and he was excellent. He would win the ball and show off the defensive side to his game but with in possession of the ball, there was a world of difference between him and Mikel as he looked to play it forward, quickly.
Everything looked good for Romeu until a serious injury halted his progress at the club and since that happened, Romeu has hardly had a look in at the club under Roberto Di Matteo, Rafa Benitez and now Jose Mourinho.
Why do I think that Chelsea have missed a trick?
Think of this passed summer and think of the numerous, constant reports you have read about Paul Pogba. A defensive midfielder who will cost heaven and earth to sign him let alone add his wage demands onto that figure!
If we are looking for a defensive midfielder to sit and play next to Nemanja Matic but are looking for someone much more dynamic in possession than Mikel then why not Romeu? He doesn't cost us a penny as he was on our books anyway and is someone who has already shown just how good he could be!
As with any player, they need a run of games to get their match fitness but to also get used to being selected week in, week out to build confidence. Romeu has never had that here since his injury and has had to settle for loan moves in the past two seasons.
Some people will argue that if he had done well in those loan moves to Spain and Germany, the clubs he played for would have been looking to sign him. To that I point you to Southampton now!
To sign a player with quality, someone who has come through the famed Barcelona Academy and has featured well for Chelsea a couple of seasons ago for as little as £5m when he could have been the answer to our problems at the moment is scandalous.
Today after signing for Southampton, Romeu said:
“It’s very good to be a part of this club.
I was looking for a good club and for something new in my career.
After spending two years on loan, I needed something permanent and a club with a future – and I think I chose the right one.
Southampton are doing the right things in the last few years and, once they came to me and asked me to come here, from the first day I was hoping to come.
Now I just want to keep going and to keep developing as a player, and I’m looking forward to start playing as soon as possible.”
It's funny but this is the SECOND player that Southampton have signed which has me feeling this way. With what has happened to Filipe Luis this summer, we missed a trick with letting Ryan Bertrand go last year. Now watch as both he and Romeu will feature heavily for the Saints this season.
What do you people think of Romeu and the fact that he has left the club for as little as £5m? Do you feel the same way that I do?
