On Saturday against Wigan, David Luiz made his 50th appearance for Chelsea and has become one of the success stories of our season. Heavily criticised by pundits all over the place, Luiz has taken a step back and has taken a very different approach lately with defending first the priority and as a result, we have seen his performances improve.
He spoke after the game about playing 50 games for the club in just over a year and said:
"I want to play important games, semi-finals in the FA Cup and the Champions League.
In England and the Premier League you play more games but I like it. I'm 24 years old, I have my health and want to play football every day. I love football and love playing big games.
I am happy because it is fantastic to play for Chelsea and 50 games in one year is so good.
This league is so difficult, injuries are always possible but I am happy to play so many games.
To start the season injured is hard, the other guys have more fitness and preparation so it was difficult but now we are the same and I am happy with my body.
It's not like Brazil but now the weather is fantastic and not so cold. All the people tell me it's good weather, we had only two days of snow. I like it here in London.
I try and want more [goals], All the players in the world, whether defenders or strikers, like to score but my mentality on the pitch is first of all defending and then if it's possible I can help the guys in attack.
I scored against Man United two times, I scored against Man City, I scored two similar goals against Bayer Leverkusen and Bolton so for me all the goals are important."
It was good to see Luiz being given a rest last night though and for the most part we looked solid without him still. With Cahill coming in and doing well, the pressure was on Luiz to up his game to keep his place in the side and he has done exactly that. Our next four games are massive with Tottenham at Wembley, Barcelona home and away and Arsenal away sandwiched in between, you can bet your life that Luiz WILL play the majority of them and that's a credit to him and how he has adopted his style.

Think you missed his latter few games where players running at him or with pace passed him as if he didn't exist & exposed his suspect positional play. may yet become top Premiership standard but think its a little way off yet. Mikel has proved his worth of late & how results have improved. buy back clause seemingly is only applicable if Chelsea wish to sell.
