Chelsea thrashed Bolton 5-1 yesterday with two goals from Danny Sturridge and a hat-trick from Frank Lampard. It was a stunning first half display from Chelsea who took full advantage of a Bolton side trying a new formation to cope with us, but never looked happy playing that way at all.
Like I said in the title of this blog post, the performance has been coming from quite some time now and our display of finishing (with the help of their backup keeper) was really good to see.
AVB had made a point about building on our performances week on week and after beating Swansea 4-1 last week we were looking for another better performance this time out. Torres was suspended for the game and Essien out so AVB had to make his mind up about the first eleven. To my surprise, David Luiz kept his place in the side and Ivanovic remained on the bench. Our midfield three once again were Meireles, Ramires and Lampard with Drogba, Mata and Sturridge up top.
The good thing for me about this season is the way we are starting games. We had seen Chelsea take a while to get into their stride but this season that has changed and yesterday we were a goal up after 93 seconds. With good possession we forced a corner that Mata swung into the box and Sturridge headed home unchallenged from 5 yards after losing his marker. A great start and we were 1-0 up.

The second goal was fantastic and our movement different class. A flowing move saw Frank slide the ball home after a series of one touch passing that Bolton simply couldn't live with. Cole played the ball to Lampard wide left who flicked the ball inside to Mata. Mata then moved forward with the ball in the middle of the pitch, played into Ramires ahead of him who first time, flicked the ball back to him. Mata then slid the ball through to Sturridge inside the box wide right, who then takes a touch, looks up and sees Lampard free on the penalty spot and plays the ball to him. Lampard calm as you like first time slides the ball passed the keeper to make it 2-0.

Chelsea were three up after only 25 minutes as Sturridge grabbed his second of the game. David Luiz, who had been getting forward into acres of space all game and popped about some great passes all day, spotted Sturridge free wide right so played the ball into him. With options once more in the box, Sturridge cut inside from the right, beat his man and fired low toward the near post. To be fair the ball bounces just before the keeper his doesn't judge it right and the ball bounces over him into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

Believe it or not with Bolton all over the place looking for midfielders to come back and help with defending wide areas, Chelsea we 4-0 up two minutes later. Again, with Bolton sitting back and our wide players forcing their wide midfielders to track back, David Luiz came forward with the ball once more from INSIDE HIS OWN HALF to just 20 YARDS FROM GOAL before anyone tackled him. He had time to look up and get a shot on target which the keeper, who's confidence was shot after making the mistake for the last goal, couldn't handle and as the ball bounced off him, who was there but Frank Lampard who with a finish most strikers would be proud off, guided the ball past the keeper on the volley from around waist height. 4-0 Chelsea!

There was some disappointment believe it or not in this game and that was the fact that we never kept a clean sheet which is proving to be a real problem for us. What I will say though, is look at the replay to see John Terry and what happened to him. I believe if he wasn't dragged to the floor, he would have been the same area as the ball when it was crossed in and maybe could have dealt with it. Anyway, within two minutes of the restart, we conceded a goal and it was frustrating once again. Shouldn't Cech come off his line and caught it?.4-1 Chelsea.

Our final goal of the game came from another classy exhibition of one touch football. Lampard sealed his hat-trick on the end of another great move. Cole played a long ball up to Didier Drogba on the edge of the box who sees Lampard in behind him. First time he flicks the ball back to Lampard who again first time, plays the ball back to Drogba left corner of the box after spinning away from his marker after flicking the ball back to Lampard in the first place. Drogba looks up and sees the Bolton defenders have dropped back towards their goal, sees Lampard once again free and unmarked on the penalty spot, and plays the ball to him first time. Lampard has time to take a touch, then with his second touch, slides the ball into the far corner past the keeper to make it 5-1 Chelsea.

Ivanovic which did look over the line.
However, Chelsea were cruising and it was sign of just how far we have come under AVB. Our defending was good, Luiz was able to break forward time after time. Cole and Bosingwa did their bit and JT was solid as ever (apart from being hauled down in the box for their goal). Meireles worked hard in the middle alongside Ramires who never had his most influential game. Lampard scored his three goals but linked up well all game.
Mata had a good game. At times he looked shattered but was always a threat. Drogba was another one who never had his best game but again worked hard for the team, as did Danny Sturridge. Sturridge was always a threat and scored two important goals for him on his return to the side, and the club. Just needs to put a smile on his face and look like he is enjoying it at least!.
So another good performance with plenty of goals and three points as we head into the international break. With United and City winning, it was important we got the win first of all, but at the same time score some goals to boost our goal difference and we did exactly that!.
