Will Kai Havertz Justify His Price Tag?

A high transfer fee can be the ruin of a player, and Kai Havertz is finding that out first-hand. The generational talent was one of the most wanted players during the summer transfer window and lots of clubs were vying for his signature.

Chelsea were always rumoured to have been leading the chase, but because of Havertz being a once-in-a-generation talent and several clubs expressing an interest in him, the Blues had to pay £70 million to get the German international.

That £70 million price tag seems to be quite a problem right now when Kai Havertz is not playing in the form of his life.

Not the First Time It Happened

Paul Pogba was the victim of his £89.3 million price tag too. In his first season after the Red Devils paid that large transfer fee for the French midfielder, Pogba's every move on the pitch came under scrutiny. Everything the player did was compared to the exorbitant transfer fee United paid for him and that didn't help him in the slightest.

Chelsea fans don't have to look far to see an example of the same thing happening at Cobham. The Blues paid £50 million for the misfiring Fernando Torres and £71.6 for their error-prone goalkeeper Kepa.

The offers that Chelsea owner made to the two Spanish international were out of this world but worked against the two players settling in the club as they should.  Torres never really got going properly, and Kepa has proven to be one of the worst Chelsea signings in history.

If you are a betting enthusiast, you probably know that a good betting offer can help your chances of success at online betting sites. That goes double if you go with the top-rated bonuses and promos found on betpack's page. Their experts have organized all betting offers from best to worst so that players can find just what they need and make the most of it.

Unlike betting enthusiasts, football players can often experience a whole host of problems because of a lucrative monetary offer their clubs made. It's fair to say that neither one of Pogba, Torres, and Kepa have justified their price tags, and the pressure of the large transfer fee did these players no favours when it came to settling in their new surroundings.

But will the same thing happen will Kai Havertz or will he perform up to the standard that everyone expects from him?  We think it's the second one and here's why.

Didn't Have a Proper Rest

Unlike most of his Chelsea teammates, Kai Havertz had to play until the middle of August 2020 because Bayer Leverkusen were participating in the elimination rounds of the Europa League.

The German team got all the way to the quarter-final stage, and Havertz was instrumental in taking them there but didn't get the rest he needed.

Had to Battle Covid-19

Most Chelsea fans remember that Havertz had quite a promising start to his Chelsea career. He even scored a hat-trick in Chelsea 6-0 rout over Barnsley and was starting to find his feet in the role Lampard had planned for him.

However, the young German was one of those few unfortunate Blues' players to have contracted COVID-19. Even worse, he seemed to have felt the full effect of the virus and, as he admitted, he was hit very hard and wasn't able to get out of bed for days.

Havertz critics often forget about these two mitigating factors, unfortunately. Once Havertz gets a decent amount of proper training and playing time under his belt, it is fair to assume that he will be a great player for Chelsea and we will forget about this transfer fee nonsense.
