JOHN TERRY: Leader, Legend and 100% deserves a new contract!

John Terry is mocked and hated by other supporters but adored by the Chelsea faithful. Without him on that pitch, being the leader and legend that he already is, Chelsea look like a different team at the back. His demanding of his team mates, his leadership, his experience and his quality are second to none in my eyes.

Before Jose Mourinho announced that his is guaranteed a new deal for next season, JT spoke to the media of his future on Sunday. When asked about his contract expiring at the end of the season, he responded by saying:

“The manager came in, sat me down and made it clear if I worked hard I’d get extra years and would play, but if not there are others players who are younger who can play and will fight for the place. So I am fighting for my future, for my family’s future, and I want to give it everything.

I don’t know how long I have left. Hopefully I have a few years left but if this is my last year then I hope it will go out on a bang. The uncertainty has helped me positively. The roles have reversed – you don’t have four or five years [of contract] ahead as you get older – and now the power is in the club’s hands. That has inspired me. I am fighting for myself and my family, and to prove people wrong. It doesn’t come much bigger than that.

I am feeling great at the minute and it would be the wrong time to go. But there does come a point where it would be the right time to go, to say it’s time to move on and people will remember you that way. I have my little target to play next year but beyond that, two or three years? I don’t know.”

So to Jose Mourinho's press conference and he too was asked of John Terry's future and Jose responded yesterday by saying:

“What I can guarantee is he will be a Chelsea player next season. I know what my board tell me and what the player tells me, so no doubts he [Terry] is going to get his contract. When I came back [in 2013] no one explained why his two previous seasons had not been his best. So I thought, physically, he is suffering. I thought many things. But, step by step, he has recovered his good feelings and is playing very well. This season even better than last.

I don’t know [how long he can play on for]. At this age, it’s very difficult to predict. At Chelsea, we decided at a certain age – to provoke and stimulate the players, and make them feel the past doesn’t play a role and it’s all about the present and tomorrow – they get one year of contract. If they don’t accept they are not ready for the challenge, and we wouldn’t want them. John accepted that challenge last year. That is a guarantee the fire is there. If the fire is there, this contract will not be the last contract he signs.”

It's a true testament to the player and the man. With all the money in football these days and the fact he has sat on a large contract for a considerable amount of time; it would be easy to walk away from the game and for JT to focus on all he has achieved.

You could tell after Moscow that he badly wanted to win the Champions League with the group we had then and personally. Once that was achieved, that could have been the time to go.

Then, less than a year later, Rafa Benitez came and tried to do his best to de-stabilise his status at the club by dropping him more often than not, so that could have been the time to call it quits and to go.

However, JT isn't made like that is he and he has fought back to do just as he says "to prove people wrong" and he has been outstanding.

You cannot buy experience and you cannot buy leadership and he has both in abundance. Just look around the Premier League now and show me a better Captain.

Forget what has ever been reported away from the game. It's what's on the pitch that counts and JT continues to remain one of Jose Mourinho's untouchables and deserves at least another year!
