Chelsea travelled to the newly promoted Burnley side at Turf Moor knowing that it potentially could be a difficult game. After going a goal down, Chelsea reacted fantastically well, with three goals in seventeen minutes to win the game.
Thibaut Courtios was named as the man between the sticks for Chelsea with a back four of Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry(c) and Azpilicueta ahead of him. Nemanja Matic partnered Cesc Fabregas in the deep midfield positions with Eden Hazard, Oscar and Andre Schurrle all supporting Diego Costa up front.
I had hoped for a quick start from Chelsea but to their credit Burnley matched Chelsea in the early stages and it was pretty much end to end until they scored. A cross comes into the box and is half cleared out to the edge of the box to Burnley's Arfield unmarked. He takes one touch to control the ball and a second to volley into the back of the net, giving Courtois no chance.
What was to follow was very, very impressive from Chelsea. At times in games such as these last season, Chelsea lost their way or struggled to turn the game into our favour, tonight with the additions of Costa and Fabregas supporting Andre Schurrle and Eden Hazard, Chelsea stepped up another level, they looked like a wounded animal.
Chelsea suddenly grabbed possession of the football and dominated. They knocked it around with ease and at pace when they needed to and Burnley couldn't cope with us.
Chelsea equalised after pressure with the ball outside their box finally told. Fabregas plays a back heel out wide right to Ivanovic, he plays a cross into the box that takes a deflection, rebounds off of the far post and Diego Costa fires home from ten years to make it 1-1 with a goal on his debut.
Now, Chelsea were right at it, back in the game and playing with some real fluidity. A total of 25 passes from back to front led to our second goal and a moment of magic from Cesc Fabregas that took us all by surprise apart from Andre Schurrle.
Eden Hazard picks the ball up in the number ten position and dribbles beyond two, three, four and five defenders and passes the ball wide to Ivanovic once again. As people stream into the box, Fabregas steps forward into space on the edge of the box and Ivanovic dinks a cross right to him at the perfect weight for him to volley the ball towards goal.
However, as the ball floats towards Fabregas, he spots Schurrle's run from the right hand side towards goal and he plays a pass on the half volley right into the path of Schurrle who has beaten the offside trap. Schurrle's run is perfect and the pass is even better and he taps the ball home into the far corner passed the goalkeeper to make it 1-2 Chelsea!
Now we are in full flow and Chelsea score a third from a set piece after a fine delivery from Fabregas again. One thing Chelsea have this season is a real physical presence and height in attack at set pieces. As Fabregas floats the ball into the box Gary Cahill and Diego Costa attack the near post, John Terry attacks the middle of the box, Nemanja Matic the far post and Ivanovic just behind JT.
Everyone misses the ball with the keeper stranded apart from Ivanovic who volleys the ball home from six yards to make it 1-3 Chelsea! The game was won in that moment.
Now in between the goals Chelsea scored, Diego Costa was booked for what the referee deemed to be a dive into the box after latching onto a poor back pass and knocking the ball around the Goalkeeper. Replays after the game have proven that Costa was caught by the Goalkeeper and his yellow card was harsh. If anything, that was the only negative from the evening.
During the second half and once again to their credit, Burnley refused to give in and kept plugging away forcing Courtois into action collecting crosses and into one fantastic save in particular, diving at full stretch to his right hand side to tip the ball over the bar.
As for Chelsea? I would have liked us to take the game forward but it was over at half time. We created little in the second half with just one or two good moments but for our first game it's something to build on. We got to see Didier Drogba for the final eight minutes which was nice.
So it's three points and a fantastic first half comeback including what could prove to be the pass of the season already.
The Premier League is back and Chelsea sit top of the league. Let's hope it stays that way come next May!
