Let's be honest here, and I have said it before, the whole situation with the transfer saga of Gary Cahill has us all wondering what the hold up could be. I cannot remember Chelsea agreeing a fee with a club and then literally taking weeks to conclude the terms with the player. It's a sign that times are a changing at Chelsea, or have they already?.

It seems that Roman Abramovich has ordered a change in the club's philosophy in order to comply with the new financial fair play regulations and the days of big contracts here are well and truly over, even Frank Lampard and John Terry will need to take pay cuts in they want to extend their deals.

Players on wages of £100,000 per week or more simply isn't going to happen as Chelsea look to follow the model set by the likes of Arsenal and Spurs. Roman spent big for instant success just like City are trying to do now but it seems that with the signings of Juan Mata and Oriol Romeu, a new hard line approach to wages has been implemented at Chelsea. Both players are rumoured to have signed deals that reflect their experience and value with Mata believed to be well under £100,000 per week.

The Cahill deal is reported to be around £50,000 a week, we will never really know for definite of course but if Chelsea can pull it off, it will be a major statement from both the club and player of Chelsea's future.

If he signs on the dotted line on these reportedly low wages, it would be an indication from the player that he wants to play for us for the right reasons, to be successful and it isn't purely based on the money.

How many years have we heard people state that people have only come here for the money especially in the early years of Abramovich? City now have the same problem and with players reportedly on around £200,000 a week or close to it, they will have massive problems trying to keep within their means.

Think of the money that Roman Abramovich has literally thrown away on player wages in recent times, it simply put will not be happening again at Chelsea and the club will not be held to ransom regarding wage demands from current or potential players.

Look at Joe Cole for example, it was rumoured that he wanted a deal at around £100,000 per week to stay and sign a new deal. At the time, he couldn't get into the side because of the form of Florent Malouda and didn't deserve to be if we are honest, the club refused and offered him an extension to his deal that reflected that and no agreement could be made, he left and signed for Liverpool for around £90,000 per week and we all know how well that worked out for them.

It seems that the Torres signing was the last of he big wages but no one knows if he is up there with the high earners. Then again, Torres revealed that he joined the club for the right reasons, money wasn't an issue and he simply wanted to come to a club that we give him the chance to win plenty of silverware (we hope!).

It's a sign of the times now at Chelsea. If you want to come and play for the club, then you have to be prepared to sign on these new lower wages. That's the dilemma Gary Cahill has had to face over the last few days and will be the same now for anyone looking to come here.
