RAUL MEIRELES SIGNS FOR CHELSEA!

Comments

Raul Meireles has signed for Chelsea. Liverpool confirmed tonight that the midfielder had handed in a written transfer request and Chelsea wasted no time in signing the Portuguese midfielder.

The statement on the Official Chelsea Website reads:
Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Raul Meireles from Liverpool on a four-year contract.

The midfielder, 28, arrives after just over a season at Anfield in which he made 44 appearances for the Reds.

Born in Aves, Portugal, the highly-rated international began his career with his hometown club before a move to top-flight Boavista, where he spent one season before moving to Porto in 2004.

It was at the Stadio do Dragao that he flourished and helped Porto to a domestic treble in 2005/06. He scored against Chelsea in the Champions League knockout rounds a year later.

Two more league titles followed in 2008 and 2009 and Meireles established himself in the national side, playing under Luiz Felipe Scolari in the lead-up to Euro 2008, where he scored his first international goal.

He played every game in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, and then scored in South Africa during the 7-0 beating of North Korea to catch Liverpool's eye.

After a low-key start in English football, Meireles came to life in January 2011, scoring five times in six games.

The 5ft 10in midfielder appeared twice from the bench for Kenny Dalglish's side this season before completing his move to Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline day.
Great news in my eyes as I posted about him the other day. What do you people think about the deal? Remember, he was with AVB at Porto who never wanted to sell him but was forced to at the time.

AVB knows exactly what he can bring to the table and in my eyes, a better player that Yossi Benayoun.

Your thoughts Chelsea fans tonight and this morning waking up to the news wherever in the world you are!?

DEADLINE DAY: Chelsea fans - Who do you want to see in/out?

Comments

It's one of the busiest days of the year when it comes to football, it's transfer deadline day until January next year. It's the final day that clubs can do business before they have to settle for what they have at 2300GMT tonight.

We all saw how it affected us last season as we let too many players go, had the injuries to key players around the same time and as a result suffered badly. It's important we do not make the same mistakes as we did this time last season.

So with that in mind and with all the rumour and speculation going on in the media, I just thought I would give you the Chelsea fan reading this a chance to air your view on who Chelsea should be looking at signing, who you think we have a realistic chance of signing and finally, who you believe could be leaving the club and giving your reasons why.

So to begin with, here are just some of the players (and blog posts/videos about them) that we have been linked with so far.

In recent weeks we have been linked with Luka Modric, Joao Moutinho, Raul Merieles and today Franck Ribery as AVB looks to add some flair to our side that is in desperate need of it this season.

We have also been linked with Perreira of Porto as a replacement for Yuri Zhikov who went back to Russia.

Possible players leaving the club as reported on here are, Florent Malouda, Alex, Yossi Benayoun, Nico Anelka and Salomon Kalou.

So, let us know your thoughts as I believe we could see two come in and possibly three or four leave today. Chelsea need to ensure we keep up with City and United and I believe as I wrote in my last blog post, today is HUGE for our season.

Looking at Man City and Man United - Today is HUGE for Chelsea!

Comments

Let's be honest here. For the past couple of seasons it has comfortably been a two horse title race without question. We have seen the challenge from Arsenal fade into the distance along with the challenge from Liverpool and have been safe in the knowledge of that.

This season after seeing the first few games, I think we all can agree, Manchester City are now in the hunt for the league title and this season has become a three horse race.

Manchester City threatened to pose a threat last term but lacked two or three players from putting together a sustainable title challenge. Their aim was simply to finish in the Champions League. After doing so, finishing level on points with Chelsea and winning the FA Cup, their aspirations are to go one step further.

City have made impressive signings and will continue to do so today no doubt. They have a fantastic squad and the additions of Gael Clichy, Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri and Owen Hargreaves (if he keeps fit) have bolstered their squad to make a challenge in ALL competitions they are aiming for.

They have started like a train and even the most staunch Chelsea fans have to agree, their attacking style of football has been really impressive. Of course being Chelsea fans, we all know what it's like to see the club spend big money as we set the benchmark and started the ball rolling when Roman came to the club and City are the new boys on the block, but Mancini is building a squad very very capable of winning things this season and cannot be written off.

Looking in from the outside, the problems they have at the moment is getting rid of the likes of Bellamy, Wright-Phillips and Wayne Bridge who no longer feature in their team but are on big money.

They need to make sure they can keep everyone happy. It seems that James Milner, Adam Johnson and possibly Gareth Barry could find themselves relegated to the bench and keeping them happy is important. Finally, they are shipping goals and if they continue to do so, they will find it difficult when they come up against the likes of United, Chelsea, Madrid and Barcelona this season. Check out Barcelona Football Tickets here too!

City can no longer be under-estimated or rejected as non title challengers.

Then we come to United and this what seems to be, another revolution of Fergie's squad. Three big money signings in De Gea, Jones and Ashley Young have revitalised the squad replacing Van Der Saar, Neville and Scholes. In addition Chris Smalling, Tom Cleverly and Danny Welbeck have taken their chance of first team football with both hands so far. Chicarito, Berbatov and Owen are waiting in the wings, Giggs and Park the same.

Evra, Anderson, Nani, Rooney, Vidic and Ferdinand will remain the backbone of the side and they will be there or thereabouts once more. Who would have thought that facing a side who had Jones and Evans as their centre halves and Cleverly and Anderson could be as strong as they have been.

They too have started the season on fire and are scoring goals for fun. Rooney looks well on top of his game and Ashley Young has settled into the side as if he has been there for years.

United are still shipping goals, they will need Vidic and Ferdinand back and for the real big big tests ahead and they have to be worried about their keeper.

However at the moment like City, it's a case of you score one, we will score two and the way they are both playing and scoring goals is making the rest of us sit up and take notice.

So where does this all leave Chelsea and how big exactly would you say today is for us?. We have bolstered our squad with signing Romeu and Lukaku who are two young players looking to make an impression at the club. Romeu, highly rated at Barcelona, so much so they have a buy back clause in his contract, will provide Mikel with some stiff competition for places.

The man mountain that is Lukaku although young, will keep the likes of Drogba, Anelka and Torres on their toes.

The signing of Juan Mata is and will be huge for Chelsea as we look to rejuvenate our squad and first team with the flair that City and United now have. Mata was rated more highly than David Silva at Valencia which says alot and we hope he can show us the reasons why. If his debut is anything to go by, he has made a great start in doing so.

It's the fact that we are all looking at Chelsea and feel as though we need a couple more in and to get rid of some of the dead wood that is the concerning factor in all this.

Do I believe we are now behind City AND United as far as squad depth goes? My answer is simple, "No I don't" but we aren't far off where we stand at the current time. If you were to ask me if we are behind them when it comes to playing attacking football in the final third then I would have to admit that we are.

Fernando Torres remains a striker that needs support, needs someone to give him the service that he and all of us are crying out for. Juan Mata will be a massive part of that, but he can't do it all by himself. The simple fact remains, if Fernando Torres gets the service, scores goals and gets total confidence back, enjoying his football, he could fire Chelsea to glory this season. We HAVE TO get the best out of him if we want to do that.

Let's be honest and hold our hands up and admit that we have managed to get away with it for some time now. The days of Chelsea have natural out and out wingers disappeared when the days of Arjen Robben and Damien Duff were over.

Chelsea have stuck with the 4-3-3 formation with only one realistic winger in Florent Malouda and have had to rely on one of our strikers to occupy the position down the right hand side. I think AVB realised this in pre season and sees a need to bolster that side of our play and bring in some quality in that area.

We cannot forget, Danny Sturridge who was our best player in pre season and have missed in our three games so far as he has been banned. Will he occupy that right hand side that seems to be a problem? We will have to wait until next weekend to see..

The core of our side and the defensive options we have will keep us strong this season. Cech, Cole, Ivanovic, Luiz, Terry, Lampard, Drogba and Torres are names some other sides would love to have on their team sheets week in week out, and while there is an element of Chelsea fans who feel that some of these have had their day, they provide experience which will help us come through difficult games.

The two fightbacks against West Brom and Norwich have shown the character of our side, but with no disrespect to either of those sides and their supporters, should we have even been in those positions in the first place?.

In my mind, there is no question whatsoever that Chelsea need at least two more signings and signings that will come today. These are important times at the football club as AVB looks to bring his philosophy into our play. This will take time and I am 100% convinced he will get things right but right now, the form and investment that Manchester United and Manchester City have shown has raised the bar for this season.

It just remains to be seen today if Chelsea will respond to keep up with them.

Chelsea turn their attention to Ribery and end Modric pursuit?

Comments

We all know that Chelsea have tried on what seems to be three confirmed occasions to tempt Spurs into selling Luka Modric to us. Modric himself has even tried to leave Spurs but that hasn't helped either. We have all had our say and our opinions but it seems that AVB has admitted defeat finally and has turned his attention on other targets.

Last weekend, I blogged about a potential move for Porto's Joao Moutinho which for me would be a great move by Chelsea. Ever since the story broke, nothing else has been said.

We have been linked with Wesley Sneijder since the summer and there are rumours going around once more that we could be in for the Dutchman but I am not so sure..

The fact of the matter is, Juan Mata is the first step to rejuventating our midfield, to add some creative flair and it seems that AVB hasn't quite given up just yet either.

According to The Sun this morning, Chelsea are looking at a bid of around £30m for Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery which is a surprise. I say it's a surprise, but it isn't the first time we have been linked with the talented Frenchman. Carlo Ancelotti tried to bring him to Stamford Bridge but that never happened, So I am wondering what will happen if this new move for Ribery goes ahead?.

According to the article, Bayern are holding out for £36m and Ribery remains one of the highest, if not THE highest paid player in German football on a whopping £180,000 per week and has FOUR years left on his current deal.

Don't get me wrong, Franck Ribery is a hugely talented player but comes with baggage as we all aware of his antics off the pitch. Do we really believe that Ribery is the answer to the player AVB is obviously looking for or is the fact that the Modric deal isn't happening, we are becoming desperate to recruit "someone"?.

If Ribery comes to the Bridge he will have to take a pay cut and are Chelsea willing to pay him those kinds of wages and that transfer fee?. We have to remember, today is the day the football world goes made so there will be rumours a plenty.

Is this just pure speculation or something that could become reality? We will have to wait and see! Here's what Ribery can do...

Arsenal bid £18m for Chelsea's Alex and Florent Malouda?

Comments

We all saw Arsenal's performance against United on Sunday and nothing more needs to be said about that. Looking in from the outside (as some of my mates are Gooners) I am surprised that they have sold BOTH Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri in the same season as close to the transfer window as they have.

It's seems that Sunday was the final straw for Wenger as far as being "tight" with the transfer funds goes and expect Arsenal to make a number of signings to bolster their squad. With a left back on the horizon, it seems that Arsene Wenger has identified Alex of Chelsea as a main target for the North London side.

Looking at our options at centre half, Chelsea have JT, Ivanovic and David Luiz left if Alex goes. Oriol Romeu can also play at centre half so the cover is there if needed and we have to be realistic and remember what happened to us with the amount of injuries we had last season. We cannot leave ourselves too short.

Another thing to consider is the fact that Alex wants to be playing. He has more than enough experience and has played well when called upon as let's not forget, he forced Ricardo Carvalho out of the side because of his form and Carvalho struggled to get back into the team.

Alex is a solid no nonsense defender and under-rated in my eyes. He played in our opening two games of the season and did ok. You know exactly what you are going to get with him when he plays. He will win balls in the air, win tackles and give everything. You could argue exactly the kind of centre half that Arsenal have been crying out for, for years now.

Would he jump ship to North London if the opportunity came about? I think he probably would as he would play week in week out. So we will have to see what happens by tomorrow night.

Now to Florent Malouda and someone else Arsene Wenger is thought to be interested in. The rumour is that Arsenal have offered £8m for him and with just a year remaining, it could be a deal that Chelsea cannot refuse.

For me being a Chelsea fan and watching Malouda perform over the years I have to say he needs to be playing week in, week out to get the best out of him. His form over the years has been up and down to be fair and I think all Chelsea fans will tell you that.

Malouda is a great player, let's not forget that and provides a balance down the left hand side. He isn't afraid to come inside or get forward at every opportunity and you would imagine would suit the Arsenal side.

In my eyes once again, I think it's fair to say that most people have questioned the fact that in recent season, Arsenal have played central midfielders down the left hand side and have never really had that out and out left sided winger/midfielder there. Malouda would be perfect in that role.

Sometjing happened here with Malouda last season. What I am saying is that when he is enjoying his football, plays with a smile on his face and as at the top of his game he can win you games by himself. He has the same class about him as Nico Anelka with the ball at his feet and really makes a difference in games.

The problem is, when he isn't on his game, and the smile disappears, then he can become a liability. Chelsea fans will tell you that at times he is one of a number of players who slows our game down, lacks urgency in his play and never really goes to beat his man, get to the byline and get the ball in box. Well he doesn't and hasn't done it enough for me.

There are a couple of things to remember here about Malouda. He only has one year left on his contract, he wants to play every week and Juan Mata coming in surely now is ahead of him in the pecking order at Chelsea.

I honestly believe, if Arsenal offer the the right money for Alex and Malouda, Chelsea will sell up. Let's just see what happens..

Liverpool turn down £7m + Benayoun bid for Raul Meireles

Comments

According to the media, Chelsea had a bid of £7m + Yossi Benayoun rejected as AVB looks to rebuild our midfield before the window closes. Now remember, the transfer window closes tomorrow at 11pm UK time so expect all sorts of stories and rumours to appear, but the fact that this story also appears in The Guardian, for me this has a substance enough to blog about it.

If rumours are to be believed, Chelsea were looking at Raul Meireles long before he made the move to Anfield. That obviously never happened but it seems now, Chelsea believe that can make their move after Liverpool have bolstered their midfield by signing Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson.

Benayoun as part of the deal? I'm not so sure that Liverpool will want him back as I cannot see how he would improve their midfield at the moment but Benayoun IS on his way out of the club as he confirmed yesterday. Chelsea will need to offer the money alone for Raul Meireles and I wonder if £10m would be enough to get him.

I personally like Meireles. He scores goals, has an eye for a pass and gets stuck in. He is the right age (28) and would be in my eyes a better addition to our midfield than Yossi Benayoun.

The article states that Chelsea are still talking to Liverpool about this deal and are trying to work something out. It's seems Liverpool are willing to cash in on the player after spending what they have, it seems Chelsea are looking at the midfield with the signings of Mata and Romeu already made, could Raul Meireles be a Chelsea player by the time the window closes?

What do you people think. Is this a good move?

The Chelsea clear out begins - Benayoun

Comments

It looks like Yossi Benayoun will become the second Chelsea squad player out the door before the deadline on Wednesday night. Benayoun (according to The Sun) has tweeted today that he is discussing a move with "several" teams and will have "news soon".

I am not surprised to be honest as I have said from day one that Benayoun wasn't a good enough signing to provide competition for places with the players we already have here..

AVB said all along that he wants to have a look at our players and to make decisions based on what he see's. Juan Mata, Ramires and Josh McEachran are now ahead of him in the pecking order so like I said it's no surprise to see Yossi leaving.

I have nothing against him personally at all. I wish him well for the future..

Chelsea 3-1 Norwich - A win is a win.

Comments

I think it's safe to say we aren't anywhere near our best at the moment. We aren't playing with the fluidity AVB is looking for and the pace of our game. Saturday was another example of the case and fair to play to Norwich who kept going and caused us problems.

Their goal was an obvious error as Hilario should have stayed put and let Ivanovic deal with the cross that came in. Hilario has done quite well and is a good shot stopper but the sooner we get Petr Cech back in goal, the quicker our defense can calm down.

As for our attacking play, again could be a lot quicker and more decisive. The positives from the game were obviously Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku coming on with Mata making an instant impact. Mata showed glimpses of what he can bring to our side and he is someone that we need in our side. Lukaku is massive and showed the strength he has that he can build on.

Like I said in the title of this blog post, a win is a win and that's important considering we aren't playing anything like our best at the moment.

People will get carried away with United and City at the moment and maybe they are quite right to be, but the fact is, we haven't played well really and have seven points out of nine. With the international break is now upon us, a time for the players to head off and take their minds off the premier league.

When they come back we have Sunderland away before the trip to Old Trafford where we hope to be getting somewhere nearer to where we want to be. We definitely need to improve and start implementing the way AVB wants us to play sooner rather than later.

The positive from the last two games is the way we have fought back and never given up. That shows the character of our side. Let's just make sure it's something we can build on asap!

CHELSEA v NORWICH - IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME.

Comments

This afternoon, Chelsea take on Norwich City at the Bridge and I think we can all agree we are looking for a better start to the game than last week. Everything that needed to be said about the West Brom game has been said and let's put an end to it and look forward to today's game.

With a full week to prepare for this one, with new players introduced to the club in Romeu, Lukaku and Mata, and AVB looking to further stamp his authority on the club, it will be very interesting to see just how he approaches the game.

We all know he prefers 4-3-3, but after half an hour last week, he made a bold decision to make a substitution and change to a 4-4-2. So will he look to stick with the same formation we finished with, revert back to 4-3-3 or introduce what many people believe to be the formation of our future and that's 4-2-3-1?.

The signing of Juan Mata has made alot of headlines this week and rightly so. He is a class act and will prove to be a fantastic signing for the club. AVB has openly said he will not start the game but will be on the bench so he could become involved at some stage. The same can be said of Lukaku and Romeu..

I do expect AVB to make some changes to the side compared to last week and will look for Ivanovic to come in to the side. Whether or not that will be for Alex or Bosingwa is another thing. It could be tempting to start Romeu in place of Mikel but I think for now, he will stick with Mikel.

I can't see Lampard or Ramires losing their places today but Ramires has to start better than last week. He needs to get in the game and settle down early on. Frank Lampard must do more to prove to people he deserves to be playing and he needs to show us much more than what he has done so far.

With this, the last of Danny Sturridge's three match ban, it's a chance for AVB to try something different maybe before he has the option of putting Sturridge back in or start with Mata. I predict that Malouda will start the game wide left, Torres will play through the middle once more but Didier Drogba will play in the "Hulk" position that he played at Porto which is off to the right of the front man.

Nico Anelka had a chance there and got his goal and did OK. Kalou hasn't done a stroke yet so why not give Didier a go there and see if we can get it working?.

Of course I could be way off here and Anelka starts but, it's games like these that enable you to use your players and try something new and that's no disrespect to Norwich at all.

As for Norwich they have earned the right to come and play here and fair play to them. You know any side managed by Paul Lambert will play football and work hard and they will look to do the same later today.

I guess being in their shoes, there is always a danger that your players could lose their focus and get lost in the whole occasion and Lambert will be keen to ensure his players don't do that. They concede an early goal and the floodgates will open as Chelsea look to become much more expressive with the ball.

Expect Lambert to give his side 20-25 minutes to sit in, keep it tight and compact and look to work hard to close down any space in their own half. It's important that Chelsea fans and players alike do not get frustrated if this happens as the game is about 90 minutes. We certainly have plenty of options to change the game.

Norwich fans and I guess their manager would see this as a bonus game. A game where they do not expect to get anything from it as they look to see where they can get the magical 40 points from this season. Anything else from today would be a massive bonus as far as they are concerned. They really have nothing to lose. I wish Norwich all the luck in the world to get the points and to stay in the league to enjoy the ride. You have a good manager and players that want to play for him so in effect your half way there.

Chelsea have everything to lose at the moment looking at our two performances so far compared to the likes of United and especially Man City's games. It is important to remember that change takes time and should be done one step at a time.

This afternoon for me anyway, is about Chelsea taking that next step and to put on a performance or somewhere there or there abouts, that we know we are more than capable of. I want to see players in between the lines of the opposition's midfield and back four creating problems and chances.

I want to see Chelsea playing with a freedom of expression at pace and not this slow laboured approach to the game we have seen for too long now. Chelsea have a chance today to make a real statement of how we will approach our football this season.

It's surely just a matter of time before we do.

Pereira - talks with Porto continue - a done deal?

Comments

I posted the other day that Chelsea had a bid of around £16.6m turned down by Porto for their left sided full/wing back Alvaro Pereira.

Well it seems after he was left out of the Porto sides Super Cup defeat to Barcelona last night, the move is still on and talks are still going on as being reported in the press.

I have to say that I do not know an awful lot about the player but it seems he will feature in AVB's plans at Chelsea and he will do what it takes to bring him to the Bridge.

It's rumoured he has a 26m Euros release fee in his contract so will Chelsea pay that much to get him? Is he actually worth that much?

My gut feeling on this one is that it's a story WITH substance and expect him to sign for Chelsea before Wednesday's deadline..

Josh McEachran pretty much did what most of us would expect him to do before the season started and asked AVB if he could go out on loan. It's seems that Fabio Capello's advice for Josh to do that was noted by our talented youngster so he asked the question. AVB's answer was a firm no and the reason's as to why he said no great to hear.

Featured in The Sun in his first major interview, McEachran revealed exactly what happened. He said:
"I did ask to go out on loan at the start of the season but Andre said he wants me to stay because he thinks I will get enough games here.

I saw in the paper that Fabio Capello wanted me to go on loan to get more experience but Andre is my manager and if he wanted me to go on loan, that's what I'd do.

It's not going to happen before the transfer window closes next week, but maybe it could happen in the new year.

When you're with a club as big as Chelsea you are always competing for a place in the team against world-class players so you know you have to be on their level just to get a game.

It does need a lot of patience but I prefer to be with a top-class club and training with world-class players every day.

I do feel much more a part of things under Andre Villas-Boas. He gave me a lot of minutes on the pitch during our pre-season games and hopefully I can keep doing that.

I have supported this club since I was a little boy and I do believe I have what is needed to succeed here. I've been patient all this time and I need to carry on that way.

Chelsea has one of the oldest teams in the Premier League and the boss is clearly looking to the future. He has just signed Romelu Lukaku, Oriol Romeu and Thibaut Courtois, three players of a similar age to me. So we all have to work hard in training and make sure we take our opportunities when they come.

Winning the European Under-17 Championships with England has been the highlight of my career so far, along with winning the FA Youth Cup for Chelsea. But now I want to get more game time with the senior team and the boss has said he'll be playing a younger side in the Carling Cup, so that could be an opportunity for me.

I really want it to happen for me at Chelsea. I've been here 10 years now and I don't see myself anywhere else. I am aware of the expectations and I have to deal with that. I know it is going to take time but I am prepared to wait.

If the manager says I'll get games here this season, that's very encouraging."
Now I just wonder where you the Chelsea fan reading this article and especially the comments mad by Josh stand as far as Josh playing is?. Some people are already asking for him to be playing week in, week out in place of Frank Lampard. Some people think that we need to ease him into the first team by playing some games, starting some games but not too many to help with his development because we don't want to see him suffering from "burn out" in a couple of years.

I am initially encouraged by AVB's stance and belief in Josh. The only thing that does concern me is that it seems at the moment he is only earmarked for the League Cup purely and simply based on what he has said..

Surely, we will see Josh coming in and being involved much more often this season?.

We have to sit back and remember just how young Josh is first of all and just how much progress he has made and how far he has come in just under two seasons..

There is no doubting his quality and the fact that AVB wants to keep him here is as like Josh says, encouraging.

CHELSEA TURN TO MOUTINHO? (VIDEO)

Comments

It seems that Spurs' defiance to sell Luka Modric has won through and Chelsea will now admit defeat in trying to persuade the Croatian to join AVB's revolution at Stamford Bridge. Although it would be a blow if this is the case because bids have been made a reported three times, it's seems that AVB will now turn his attentions to another of his old pals at Porto and that's Joao Moutinho.

Moutinho is only 24, and played a huge part in the success that AVB had there last term. Reading this article in the Daily Mail though, he has part of his economic rights owned by a third party and if bought for over 11m Sporting Lisbon would be entitled to 25% of the sell on fee..

This could become a major stumbling block as you would imagine Porto would want top dollar for their instrumental midfielder.

So what could Moutinho bring to the table at Chelsea if we do in fact turn our attentions to him and away from Luka Modric. Well, I found this video posted on YouTube that demonstrates exactly what he can do..

What a player. Some of those clips were fantastic and shows he is great with the ball at his feet, quick, likes to get stuck in and has a class about him..

I will say it now, I would prefer him over Modric any day, but what do you people think?. Let's hope this story is true and we DO make a move for Moutinho!

Chelsea urged to rip up Anelka's contract??

Comments

Nicolas Anelka has always said he wants to stay at Chelsea. OK, he only has one year left on his contract and would I guess be more than happy to see it out, remain a part of the squad in AVB's first season and to try and gain some more success here before he walks away.

However, it seems that newly promoted Real Betis, with money to spend are looking to rejuvenate their forward line for the coming season and with Roque Santa Cruz expected to sign for them tomorrow, it seems that they have turned their attention to Anelka.

Knowing he only has a year left on his contract, the Mirror is reporting that they are trying to get Chelsea to rip up Anelka's contract now they have just signed Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku. This would mean that Anelka would become a free agent and Betis would be more than happy to make him an offer.

The deal would suit Betis down to the ground as there would be no transfer fee involved so could offer Anelka a bumper pay day. Whether or not Anelka would even entertain the idea is another thing.

I have to say, Anelka is a class act and it would be a shame to see him go. But, we have to face a new reality at Chelsea, and it seems that reality is change. Would Anelka be able to handle being on the bench for a whole season to play just a bit part at the club or to cut his ties and take one more "healthy" pay packet in Spain playing week in, week out?

I guess by Wednesday night, we will see.

CHELSEA GET VALENCIA, LEVERKUSEN AND GENK IN THE CHAMPS LEAGUE

Comments

Chelsea have been handed a decent draw in the Champions League this time round. Juan Mata will be more than interested to see we have been drawn against his old side Valencia. Michael Ballack will be happy to see that we have drawn his Leverkusen side and finally Genk of Belgium close out our group (see below)

I think we should be ok and go through with ease compared to a couple of the other groups.

Your thoughts people?

£16.6m not enough for Alvaro Pereira

Comments

According to reports coming from Porto, Chelsea made a bid of around £16.6m for Pereira which has been rejected. Alvaro Pereria can play as full back or wing back down the left hand side and seems to have been identified as a direct replacement for Yuri Zhirkov who left the club earlier this month.

According to The Guardian, Chelsea will head back to Porto with an improved offer that is somewhere close to his reported £26m release clause in order to get their man knowing that Porto have already signed a direct replacement for him.

Pereira at 25 would be another good signing to bolster the squad but I cannot see him forcing Ashley Cole out of the side at the moment as Cole has made a good start to the season.

With Van Aanholt and Bertrand in our squad already, and Malouda now also being linked with a move away after the signing of Mata, wouldn't it be a good idea for the club to give one of them a chance to get involved in some first team football or has the pressure to deliver trophies at the club EVERY season, forced the club to invest once more?

MATA "Chelsea to play attacking football. I will play big part"

Comments

Juan Mata was officially unveiled as a Chelsea player yesterday in a move believed to be around £25m. A fantastic signing for the club. We all have had our say on him and what he can bring to the team, but for now, he spoke about the reasons he signed for the club and what he believes he can bring to Chelsea. He said:
"Right from the first moment there have been good feelings all around me, Training has been great and the players are a great group to train with.

Andre Villas-Boas said he wanted Chelsea this season to play more attacking football, and that I would be a big part of that. Villas-Boas is someone who won almost everything last year and we are both here with the idea of winning lots this season.

The plan is that I can play on either flank or even in the middle playing in between the lines of midfield and attack. I like to keep the ball and use it well, I am an attacking player and above all I like to set up goals and score them also.

I want to adapt as quickly as possible to my new surroundings, my colleagues and this league, and I would love to win a trophy in my first season. If it can be the Premier League then great.
(Source)
Now there is a key point he makes in his interview which is part of the reason I posted about Malouda earlier. Mata says that AVB has told him he "is a big part of his plans" and looking at the way Mata plays the game, we have to consider that he will start most games now.

He is quick, has great feet, and eye for a pass and an eye for a goal and will definitely bring a new dimension to our style of play. I said it before about Fernando Torres and playing to his strengths. Juan Mata will be a major part of Torres being a success here!.

I can't wait to see him play now! Let's hope it's on Saturday!

Chelsea to sell Malouda for as little as £5m?

Comments

A news story broke yesterday afternoon/evening that took me by surprise but thinking about it, could make perfect sense. The story relates to the "sudden" availability of Florent Malouda to European clubs for as little as £5m before the transfer window closes next Wednesday.

Now straight away I thought "No way" purely and simply because of the balance that Malouda provides us down that left hand side when he plays and plays well. Now Yuri Zhirkov has left the club we look a different side when he isn't playing just like we did for the first 35 minutes against West Brom at the weekend.

The again, I thought to myself, well he is 31 and just has one year left on his contract. Last season his formed wavered from starting well, to being diabolical and to picking up towards the end of the season. I said it at the time as it was almost like the smile had gone from his face, he wasn't enjoying his football and looked as though he had plenty of issues going on that prevented him for enjoying football.

I think the signing of Juan Mata is massive and will be huge going forward. At just 23, Mata being naturally left sided, would be the ideal replacement for Malouda. There is the age, the ability and at the end of the day he is a totally different player that WILL offer Chelsea something very different to Malouda.

According to the press, Malouda is of "interest" to Juventus and their General Manager. So expect a bid of around £5m to come in for the Frenchman.

Could it be that AVB has decided that Malouda is the next person out the Chelsea door and why would he?. For me, Malouda isn't your pacey winger looking to beat his man at every opportunity, get to the byline and whip in all sorts of crosses on a regular basis and I think you will agree with me that at times, he slows our game down.

Maybe it's purely because of the fact that he does slow the game down that has forced AVB's hand as he is looking for Chelsea to play fast, expressive, attacking football?.

I have to say though, £5m is a big surprise as you would think we would want more. Maybe it's because he only has a year left and Chelsea need to shift some players out the door that they have taken this step.

We do have to remember, and people bear with us on this. The next 6 days or so will be immense as there will be plenty speculated about Chelsea with numerous players being linked with moves in and out of the club.

One thing is for sure though. AVB has said from day one that everyone has a chance to impress him in pre season and in training and he will make decisions from then.

Could it be Malouda next shown the door by AVB? What do you think?

The £120m Blue Revolution - so who goes?

Comments

Yes, £120m this calendar year on six players and it seems that Chelsea still have every intention on spending more as Roman Abramovich started it, but AVB will take on the blue revolution at the Bridge.

Luiz, Torres, Courtious, Lukaku, Romeu and Mata are the names we have brought to the club and with rumours rife that we are in for Pereira of Porto and a central midfielder, that figure will rise to well over £150m.

The new bid for Pereira of Porto (around £16.6m) who can play as a full back or wing back down the left hand side is an interesting one. With Patrick Van Aanholt and Ryan Betrand signing new contracts, it seems as though we have enough cover, but with AVB looking at Pereira now, Bertrand and Van Aanholt could be sent out on loan for the season.

At the moment with Mata expected to sign today/tomorrow it takes our squad number to 28 players. Let's not forget Gael Kakuta in that equation also. So if Kakuta, Betrand and Van Aanholt go out on loan that takes us back down to 25 players for the season.

So if we are looking for a midfielder to come in alongside a left sided player to replace Zhirkov, then we have to expect two of our current first team squad to leave the club so I wonder who that would be?.

We are more than covered with our Goalkeepers. Cech as the number one backed up by Hilario and Turnbull.

At right back we have Bosingwa and Ferreira.

Left back is Cole.

At centre back we have Alex, JT, Luiz and Ivanovic so we are fine there.

The holding midfield position we now have Mikel and Romeu.

Central midfield we have Essien, Lampard, Ramires, McEachran and Benayoun.

Left wing we have Malouda and Kalou.

Right wing we have Anelka, Sturridge and Mata.

Up front we now have Drogba, Torres, Lukaku and Anelka.

So we currently have the 26 players above not including Kakuta, Van Aanholt and Bertrand. So like I said earlier, if Pereira and a midfielder come in who would you get rid of?.

I personally can't see him getting rid of Paulo Ferreira as he played well in pre season and he knows him from his time here before. He can also provide cover at left back.

I think if someone like Modric, Moutinho or Meireles comes into our midfield then we are too heavy there so for me, Benayoun would be the player who leaves.

That leaves the quandary of our forward line or the three up front. Malouda provides a natural balance on our left hand side and I can't see him going.

Torres won't go, Drogba won't go as he is negotiating an extension to his contract, Anelka is versatile but whether or not he is happy being in and out of the side in the final year of his contract is another thing. Danny Sturridge was the most impressive player of pre season so I really cannot see him leaving.

Lukaku is a new signing so he's not going anywhere so that leaves Kalou. I really cannot emphasise this enough, he has been woeful all pre season and in the two games he has started this season. In my mind he hasn't given anything to AVB that shows what he can do and what he can bring to our side IN MATCHES. Forget training, it's all well and good playing well on the training pitch, but if you can't take that onto the pitch on match days then there is a problem.

So for me, it would be Benayoun and Kalou that is shown the door IF we do sign two more players before the window closes in addition to Nico Anelka purely because of Sturridge being selected in front of him.

So what about you?. If we did sign these two new players (left sided full back/wing back and a midfielder) who would you see out the door before the window closes and give your reasons why.

One thing is for sure, it's going to be busy next week at Chelsea!.

The new boys talk about Chelsea...

Comments

Today, Oriol Romeu and Romelu Lukaku spoke for the first time in public about their moves to Stamford Bridge and both are keen to point out, they want to work hard to earn the right to take their place among "the great players" we have at our club.

First up on the website is Oriol Romeu who many are touting for a number of games this season in a Chelsea shirt. He spoke of the move and his interest in Chelsea.

He said:
'This is one of the best clubs in the world, the coach expressed an interest in me and I thought it would be a wise choice to take advantage of being part of such a huge club.

I have been interested in this club for a while now. I understand there are a lot of high-level footballers here but my aim is to keep improving and learn from the other footballers around me and work hard as part of this team.

I am just going to make the most of the experience and take advantage of all the opportunities that arrive. I am going to work hard in training and give it my all, and earn whatever opportunity arises to play in the first team. I am not setting myself important long-term goals, I'm just going to give it my all during every training session.'

Next up Lukaku who as we all know has supported Chelsea since the age of 10. He too is keen to point out that he has come here to learn and work hard. He said:
'To be compared with Didier is a very big honour to me, Every time I spend time with him we talk and I sit next to him in the dressing room. I listen all the time because he gives advice and, also with Nico and Fernando it is the same, so I am very happy to have world-class strikers around me.

I am not here to replace him, just to play for Chelsea and I hope he will stay as long as possible so I can play with him and continue learning from him. He is a world-class striker.

When we do some finishing exercises after training he said to focus as long as possible when you hit the ball, until the last minute. [These are] very small things but very efficient.

The English Premier League is the biggest competition in the world so it will not be as easy as Belgium, but first of all I want to learn from the players that are here and after that I want to show to the coach that whenever he needs me I am ready. First of all I want to train and be as fit as possible.

Here you train at a very high level and make much more effort than in Belgium. I am very aware of that. I'm very proud to be here. I worked for a long time to come at this level and to be here makes me very proud.

At my young age there is still very far to go, and after one week I am very focused to be better. To train with these guys is important, and to listen to the experience they had in the past is also very important and I am very happy about that."
You have to say that these comments from both of these youngsters are good to hear because they portray the same message about working hard. Both of them speak of the players around them, the fact that they aren't here to replace people but to learn from them.

You'd imagine that Romeu would feature this season alot more than Lukaku because of the injury to Micheal Essien. Mikel needs cover and maybe just maybe, Romeu will be given HIS chance sooner rather than later.

Imagine being Lukaku though these days at training. They say you can learn alot from experienced players but to be able to watch and listen to the likes of Drogba, Anelka and Fernando Torres, arguably three of the best strikers in the world, has to be amazing.

Welcome to Chelsea the both of you!.

LAMPARD: He WILL come good again for Chelsea.

Comments

Frank Lampard hasn't exactly set the world alight with his two performances in the Premier League this season and as a result I have seen people on here stating that he should be dropped to the bench in place of Benayoun or McEachran.

I just want to point out one thing to the people that are starting to doubt Frank Lampard, people that are jumping on the bandwagon that he is too old and passed it.

Juan Mata, speaking of his decision to join Chelsea made a comment about Frank Lampard in particular and it's something we seem to be forgetting right now when it comes to our talisman in midfield. He said:
"Frank Lampard is a monster of a footballer to play alongside and the prospect of that is incredible."
We are only two games into the season and people are doubting Frank and I really do find that incredible. He set up Anelka's goal with the flick passed the defender and still worked hard getting up and down the pitch to support our defence and forward line.

If you take Frank Lampard out of our midfield, we are not the same team. It's my opinion and I am sticking with it. (Everyone has their own on this so I want to hear your thoughts and comments too!) Do you honestly think that we have seen the best of Lampard or do you think that it's too soon to judge at the moment?

Frank Lampard will score 20+ goals again this season and will prove all you people that are doubting him wrong.

Form is temporary, class is permanent! Mark my words!

MATA: "Arsenal and Spurs interested. Do not compare with Chelsea".

Comments

Juan Mata hasn't even officially signed for Chelsea until later today but he has already endeared himself to Chelsea fans all over the world. Featured in The SUN this morning, Mata has revealed that Chelsea wasn't the only Premier League club interested in him this summer but for him. He said:
"I want to come to England to win trophies - and that's why I accepted Chelsea's offer.

It was also a question of sporting achievement, not money. Arsenal and Tottenham were both interested in me but they did not compare with the Blues.

I want the Premier League title and this is possible at Chelsea.

Fernando Torres helped influence my decision but speaking directly with Villas-Boas was the decisive factor.

He explained how his style will be based on 4-3-3 and how important I will be to his plans."
I am really excited about this guy. Just watching him play and seeing what he is about is defiantly something that all of us should look forward to seeing in a Chelsea shirt.

He explains in another interview featured in The Guardian, that he is not your out and out winger stuck out wide and expected to stay there. He said:
"I am not an old-style winger stuck right out on the wing and limited to running at people and getting crosses in. I like to drop inside and get between the lines. I tend not to try to take people one on one; I believe in movement, interchange and being vertical [incisive]."
So could he be someone we went after instead of Luka Modric, or is Mata the missing link down Chelsea's right hand side?.

One thing is for sure, the fact he has said what he has said about Arsenal and Spurs shows that despite everything, it comes down to being successful and winning things. Yes you lot from North London may come on here and have a pop at Chelsea because of the amount of money we have spent over the years, but I ask to you the following questions:
Arsenal fans, are you not calling out for Arsene Wenger to invest heavily in your squad so that you are capable of making a challenge for the title and to try and get back ahead of City?

Spurs fans, if someone came in to buy your club and invest masses amounts of money so you never had to sell your best players, and could take you to the next level to keep up with City, would you say no?

Make sure Chelsea fans, you check out the Mata post I wrote yesterday and also the video I posted last week to see just what we have brought to the club.

It's exciting times once again at Chelsea and if AVB can get things right this year with maybe one more big name signing, it could be yet ANOTHER successful season at The Bridge!.

Chelsea suffered from anxiety...What!?

Comments

Listen, I have had my say on Saturdays performance and you guys have expressed your opinions too whether you agree with me or not and that's fair enough, but the point I am trying to make was that everything we had worked on in pre season and looked like implementing simply disappeared in the first half.

AVB has aired his on take on things and what happened particularly in the first half and said:
“Today it was a very emotional game. The emotional part of the game was the main difference from the first half to the second half.

In the first half we suffered a little bit with anxiety because we conceded the first goal too early, and we couldn't express ourselves.

Then when you find the back of the net for the 1-1, the emotional impact on the opponent is tremendous and we felt very confident to search for the second goal, and we found it.

We had a fantastic second half and played in their half and created numerous opportunities. We were dominant like we should have been in the first half.”
Look, I commend AVB and the players for the way they approached the second half but let's not forget the save at full stretch Hilario had to make in the second half. So let's get real for a second as there is a particular sentence that AVB has said that caught my eye straight away. The part I am referring to is the "we suffered a little bit with anxiety" part.

Now why on earth, with the players we have suffer from anxiety?. For the most part these players have been there and done that when it comes to winning games in the Premier League. It really worried me that we did so easily slip back to playing how we did last season in the first half. OK, it will take time under AVB and I am 100% certain it will all come together, just the fact that we never kept belief in how we wanted to play, our game plan or anything really worries me.

I know it's the managers first game at home and the players want to do well because he has already spoken of the fact that if your form is good, you will play, but the fact that we did slip back into last season's mode is something that I don't think any of us would have even considered walking to the ground on Saturday..

I just hope this week, the players realise what's expected and the first half performance we saw on Saturday, is the last of the kind we see this season.
