OPINION: Carlo's transfer kitty... Just how much has he got?

Comments

Jan. 17, 2010 - 05356193 date 16 01 2010 Copyright imago Paul Marriott Pic Paul Marriott Chelsea v Sunderland 16 01 10 Chelsea Chairman Bruce Buck and His Chief Executive Ron Gourlay PUBLICATIONxNOTxINxUK men Football England Premier League 2009 Vdig xmk 2010 horizontal premiumd.

Chelsea Chief Executive Ron Gourlay said the other day:
"If Carlo wants to bring a player or two into the squad then we will look at that, It has to be the right player to fit into the squad and obviously at the right price. If these things all come together then fine, we'll strengthen the squad. But only if Carlo feels it's necessary."
Obviously I wouldn't have thought it would be on a par with Manchester City but if you think back to the success we had last season and the financial rewards that come with that success, and not forgetting the fact that we never spent massive amounts of money last season in both the summer and January, I would imagine it's a fair few quid!.

With the story just breaking about Ramires pleading to come to Chelsea and the Fernando Torres saga seemingly far from certain I wonder how much do you think Carlo has to spend?.

RAMIRES: He pleads for "Dream" Chelsea move!

Comments

Brazilian soccer player Ramires attends a news conference in Johannesburg May 31, 2010. REUTERS/Paulo Whitaker (SOUTH AFRICA - Tags: SPORT SOCCER WORLD CUP)

The whole Ramires transfer saga has been hotting up in the last couple of days. Just the other day I reported that Chelsea could have the transfer completed by the end of the week. Benfica came out and denied a deal would happen soon after but today the player himself has added his voice to the speculation and as a result of his statement we have to believe its surely a matter of time before he comes to Stamford Bridge. He said:
I know there has been a bid for me from Chelsea, this is a great honour, it is like a dream come true, I have dreamt of playing in the Premier League and now to have the opportunity to play for the best team in the Premier League and for a club with so much history - it would be my dream. I hope this can happen, and I hope that I can help Chelsea to regain the Double and also to win the Champions League next season

I am looking forward to playing with the likes of John Terry, Petr Cech, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, they are amongst the best in the world, to play with players like this under a manager of the stature of Carlo Ancelotti whom I admire and respect, in a club with so much spirit and winning mentality, would be a tremendous privilege. In the process I would like everyone to know I had a fantastic year at Benfica, and I respect them a lot, but this is a dream that I cannot let go."

Comments

The Chelsea Daily Drivel is a daily update of all the stories concerning our club, the rumours, the opinions and more....

So here is the latest from around the web on Thursday 29th July 2010 including: Nicolas Anelka and Neil Bath,

Apr. 13, 2010 - United Kingdom - Football - Chelsea v Bolton Wanderers Barclays Premier League - Stamford Bridge - 13/4/10..Nicolas Anelka celebrates with Salomon Kalou (R) and Frank Lampard (L) after scoring Chelsea's first goal.

First to news of Nico Anelka now he back at "home" at Chelsea after the World Cup disaster in South Africa. He has spoken now he has back. He said:
"Training so far has been good and I feel fit, we worked very hard and it will be harder and harder until the beginning of the season. After a few days you want to be out playing matches again, I like my football so when I come back, I can't wait to be on the pitch and playing.

I have been playing for so long and I still want to play and win every game. When you have this kind of mentality and play at this kind of club you want to play, enjoy your football and win your games.

We have two games in Germany, so we play them and we want to win them, that's the most important thing, It is good to start in that way before the season, we have a good team and when you play for Chelsea you have to win all your games, so we will go there and try to come back with good results.

When we are back from Germany, we have the Community Shield which is a big game, but for the players the most important is to be fit for the first league game against West Brom.

Now to Chelsea Academy Chief Neil Bath. After a successful season last season winning the FA Youth Cup Bath has revealed it will not be too long until we begin to see some of the current crop into the first team squad and beyond. He said:
"We talk about winning youth tournaments as progress and getting debuts and appearances, and getting lads out on loan, but ultimately it is all about getting players into the first team squad. When Carlo says maybe five lads in you start thinking okay, this year is really starting to show a light at the end of the tunnel because it has been difficult. We are getting there but we are still a way off."

Its not yet officially confirmed by Chelsea but Mick McCarthy has more or less confirmed its happened today. Michael Mancienne has handed in a transfer request and has asked to leave Chelsea. Mancienne has spent most of his recent times out on Loan and had seemingly become frustrated at Chelsea.

Opinion: Is Hodgson's Torres statement a smoke screen?

Comments

July 27, 2010 - United Kingdom - Football - Liverpool - Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic & Danny Wilson Press Conference - Anfield - 27/7/10..Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson during the press conference.

Ok so we all know the Torres situation. I have been writing on here for weeks now about Torres and his future..It has culminated in today my earlier post about the bets on Torres coming to Chelsea being suspended by one bookmaker and Abramovich making big waves in the transfer market.

Since then Roy Hodgson spoke to press today and mentioned Fernando Torres. He was asked about the constant reports that Torres was unhappy at Liverpool. This is what he said:
"I know nothing about that as far as I know. He's looking forward to coming back here, he's back on Monday, He's enjoying a holiday and a well deserved break, I don't think he's had one for three years. He's spending a lot of time with his family. As far as I know he's keeping a very low profile and not really speaking to anybody. But he has told us that he's looking forward to Monday and getting back to work.

He's looking forward to playing for Liverpool next season. That's what I know and I would suggest that any other reports are erroneous."
To me anyway this seems a remarkable turnaround from Hodgson. He only said the other day that he "has a problem with the club" so to now say he is happy to stay at Liverpool this season is strange.

I have to wonder and ask the question:
Is it all a smoke screen?

Roman to splash the cash on Ramires/Torres this week?.

Comments

May 09, 2010 - United Kingdom - Football - Chelsea v Wigan Athletic Barclays Premier League - Stamford Bridge - 9/5/10..Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich (C.

Could this be our biggest week in the transfer market for a couple of years?.

June 13, 2010 - Johannesburg, South Africa - epa02199668 Brazil's Ramires addresses the media during a press conference at the team hotel, Johannesburg, South Africa,13 June 2010. Brazil face North Korea in their first match.

It's expected that Chelsea will wrap up the signing of defensive midfielder Ramires from Benfica in a deal worth approx £17m plus add ons. This story has been running for weeks now after a bid was made and rejected by Benfica.

June 19, 2010 - Pochefstroom, South Africa - epa02210987 Spain's national soccer team player Fernando Torres looks on during a press conference at Potchefstroom, South Africa, 19 June 2010. Spain will play their second game against Honduras on 21 June.

Also with the bookies suspending betting on Fernando Torres' future yesterday after a surge of bets backing Chelsea, could Torres be a Chelsea player by the end of the week?. After all we all know he isn't happy at Liverpool and as its official it seems as though its the end of the road for his time there.

I could be wrong and it just be one or the other.. then again I could be right too!

Let's hope there are serious developments at Chelsea in the coming days.

Its official! Fernando Torres not happy at Liverpool!

Comments

Spain's Fernando Torres attends a news conference in Potchefstroom June 19, 2010 . REUTERS/Marcelo del Pozo (SOUTH AFRICA - Tags: SPORT SOCCER WORLD CUP IMAGES OF THE DAY)

The whole Fernando Torres story has taken a turn this morning after new Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has revealed that Fernando Torres has issues with the club and he is powerless to keep him. This surely is a sign for Ambramovich to pounce in the coming days. As reported in The Sun Hodgson has said:
"Unfortunately, I cannot do much more. His beef is with the club and not me. Fernando's situation has nothing to do with me, he made that perfectly clear over the phone during the World Cup and when I met him face to face.

He knows what I would like to do with the club. He knows how much I value him. But his issues are with what has gone on in the past rather than the future. If he has problems with the club for things in the past, it is difficult for me to dismiss that.

A lot of effort has been put in by the club to make Fernando feel comfortable at Liverpool this season and I can't do much more. It is now for the club to satisfy him in whatever ways he needs satisfying."

It's simple, he isn't happy now at Liverpool and its time to bring him to Chelsea!. More on this to follow..

Chelsea fans are you worried about City this season?

Comments

July 23, 2010 - United States of America - Football - Sporting Lisbon v Manchester City 2010 New York Football Challenge - Pre Season Friendly - Red Bull Arena, Harrison, New Jersey, United States of America - 23/7/10..Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini.

With news of Manchester City splashing the cash again this summer I am wondering how the rest of you feel about there chances of success this season?.

Mancini has already spent close to £100m so far this summer and the spending is not finished if reports are to be believed. The story coming out of Eastlands rings bells to us all after Roman Ambramovich came to Chelsea. There is one difference between us and City though and that's the amount of players being brought in.

At Chelsea we did it over time. Ok the first season was the busiest period of transfer activity but after that period passed it slowed down and we brought in just a few over the course of the next couple of seasons.

The difference is City are literally throwing money at everything constantly and as a result have ended up with a first team squad of 37 players with just five weeks to cut the numbers down to 25 as per new Premier League rules.

There are reports this morning that the likes of SWP, Wayne Bridge, Lescott, Richards, Onuoha, Bellamy, Ireland, Santa Cruz, Jo, Caicedo, Robinho and De Jong could be moved on away from the club.

The key here apart from the last two to remember is that all these players have Premier League experience and if you take that away from City you are left with only a few that have experience of playing in the best league in the world and that will be their downfall once again this season.

I believe its the likes of Spurs and Everton with players with experience that will feature week in week out that will threaten City to finish fourth. Its a long old season and I belive one of these two will still finish above City this season.

DROGBA: City in talks with agent?

Comments

(Article that has appeared in the Sun and on their website this morning)

Well as reported on here last week Manchester City ARE interested in Didier Drogba. Its rumoured that they are looking to offer £20m for our hitman with a financial package of £6m per season for three years.

Of course at the time it was a story that none of us fans wanted to hear as we prepare for a better assault this season on the Champions League.

Today the Sun has reported a quote from the players agent Thierno Seydi and I have to say its not exactly encouraging for Chelsea. He has said:
"Today he's at Chelsea. Maybe there will be surprises before August 31. I haven't spoken to just anybody. The only contact I've had directly was with City. At his age I can no longer hide the financial aspect. The club that want Didier will have to meet the price."
Of course we all know what agents are like especially when it comes to the financial value of their players. For me though the worrying aspect of what he said comes down to two things. First he acknowledges Didier's age and being 32 has probably one or maybe two seasons left in him performing at the same standard he has latley. The money City are reported to have offered is something I am sure he would want Didier to consider.

Secondly its the fact that according to the agent Chelsea have a price in mind for Drogba. Why would Chelsea even quote a price or put a price tag on Drogba at this stage?.

More to come....

Champions League not Premier League for Carlo?.

Comments

May 16, 2010 - United Kingdom - Football - Chelsea Victory Parade - London - 16/5/10..Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti talks to the fans.

Carlo Ancelotti has spoken of Chelsea's aims for this coming season. He said:
"Our aim is to do better than last year in the Champions League, We went out too early last season. It is not easy to be competitive in every competition. If it's possible then we want to repeat what we did last year in the other competitions."
So does that mean that our focus this season is Champions League alone and if we can do well in the Premier League and domestic cups then so be it?. Or does he mean he wants to add the Champions League with the same success we had last season?. For me I want the Premier League again aswell as the Champions League.

Some come on Chelsea fans two questions for you:
1. What's the priority for you personally this season?.
2. What would be a realistic successful season for you that you would take right now before the season starts?

Would love to hear from you and read your individual opinions!.

John Terry to be axed for England?

Comments

World Cup Winner Fabio Cannavaro has spoken out about England, Fabio Capello's staying on as Manager and John Terry after playing under Capello in the past and from what he says, expect John Terry to not feature for England again under Capello!. He said:
"My thoughts are that John Terry won't be on the team sheet. You don't cross Fabio and he won't want anybody disrupting his tournament again.

It was absolutely the correct decision for the English FA to keep Fabio on. He can make this England team his own now - and I would actually make them the favourites for Euro 2012.

I don't want to speak for Fabio but I'd be surprised if more than five of the players who started against Germany start the opening game of Euro 2012. For me, the only two players that can be guaranteed to start in 2012 are Ashley Cole and Wayne Rooney. By then Fabio will have had enough time to build his own team and I think it will be unrecognisable compared to what it was at the World Cup.

Spain will be there but if Fabio gets rid of egos, I think England will see exactly why it was a good decision to keep him on."

I have spoken of my view at the time JT spoke out and afterwards and I stand by it.

What do you fellow Chelsea / England fans think? Should be axed or stay?

Could Carvalho be the next to leave?

Comments

June 25, 2010 - Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa - epa02222574 Portugal's Ricardo Carvalho heads for the ball during the FIFA World Cup 2010 group G match between Portugal and Brazil at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, South Africa, 25 June 2010.

According to Goal.com Ricardo Carvalho could be the next player to leave us this summer. Carvalho has been reportedly spotted in Milan and this has started rumours that he could be Rafa Benitez's first signing for Inter.

It seems to me towards the end of last season under Hiddink and also the end of this past season under Ancelotti, its Alex who is favoured to play next to JT at the heart of our defence. With Ivanovic ready to step into the role if needed (when Bosingwa becomes available again) its seems that its more than likely that Riccy's time at Chelsea will come to an end.

The question is, should we let him go? What do you think?

City £20m bid for DIDIER DROGBA!!

Comments

Yep its true, well at least reported by The Sun. Manchester City are looking to offer Chelsea £20m for Didier Drogba. Its reported that Roberto Mancini is interested in Didier and being the age he is (32) Chelsea could cash in if they feel the offer is too good to refuse. In the article on the website a source close to Drogba has apparently said:
"Chelsea will have to decide whether they want him to stay. City's offer will be tempting considering Didier's age."
Its reported that if this is in fact true he could earn £18m over a three year contract.

What do you think Chelsea fans? Is it time to cash in on Didier and use the money to sign Torres? Or do we need Didier for our Champions League quest this season?

Do we sell YES or NO?

Now there has been speculation a plenty this summer ever since the season finished, since the World Cup has been taking place in South Africa and more so since the news broke that Joe Cole and Michael Ballack in particular were released from the club. We are being linked with everyone and their mother at the moment.

I have had my opinion on the Benayoun signing and still stand by my opinion as Chelsea look to strengthen the squad and replace the players who have left and will be leaving the club before the start of the new season.

As reported on here the other day in one of the Daily Drivel's, Petr Cech spoke about the future Chelsea signings and reiterated the point I have been trying to make about the signing of Benayoun. If you missed it this is what he said:
"As a player I only hope that if somebody leaves, he will be replaced with a player at least with the same quality or better. I think this is important for the group then you know that if someone leaves, their departure will not create any gap between the quality of the last season and the new season."
So I ask the question why not turn our attention to Wesley Sneijder?.

Today reports all over the press and the media state that Manchester United have made their interest known in the player to his club Inter Milan and their owner is even "expecting" a bid from United reportedly in the region of £29m.

We all know first hand the quality of Sneijder as he took Inter Milan to the Champions League final beating us twice along the way. His performances in the World Cup have been fantastic and he is a major major part of their success.

At the age of 26 surely this is the player we should be looking to bring to the club alongside Lampard and Essien for the new season. Sneijder is quality and there is no question about that. He would be the perfect foil for Lampard and I believe would also score for fun in the Premier League.

What do you guys think? Would you want to see Chelsea go after Sniejder?

Chelsea sign Tomas Kalas

Comments

Chelsea have made another signing this summer and thats the signing of 17 year old highly rated Centre Back Tomas Kalas. The deal is worth reported to worth a total of £5.2m to his club Sigma Olomuc.

Kalas will remain at Sigma for this season and will then come to Chelsea for the start of next season. I have to be honest and confirm that I do not know anything about Kalas at all. Chelsea Academy director Neil Bath is quoted as saying:
He is a very good one-on-one defender and comfortable on the ball, We feel there is a lot of potential in the player, and we feel at the minute it is the right time to get him, but it would be good for him to stay there and get first team experience, and we look forward to him joining us next year. Obviously we will stay in touch and he will come across here when appropriate. He is a right-sided centre-half who can play right-back."

Just to prove we never bought the title!.

Comments

I was reading this article this morning and it made me realise that its been since way back to the Summer of 2006 that Chelsea spent more than £20m on a single player.

I was taken a back slightly as after all we have had the "bought the league!" comments thrown at us ever since. So I checked out this website and there it is for all to see and its true. The last time we spent £20m+ was on Andrei Schevchenko. Last summer Yuri Zhirkov was signed for approx £18m but that's about it.

So it makes me wonder now we have won the double last season and have re-established our grip on the title without throwing pointless amounts of money about, has Roman Abramovich decided its time that we start again?.

You have to say that with Joe Cole and Ballack going there is a gap in the quality of our squad. With Benayoun signed for £6m I can see Chelsea making maybe one or two marquee signings this summer.

The question I have to ask you is:
"Would you spend £20m+ on a player this summer and if so who would it be?"

Well its confirmed. Chelsea have signed Yossi Benyoun as confirmed on the Chelsea website and I have to say I am far from convinced. We are being linked with players like Kaka, Nilmar, Torres, Milner, Schweinsteiger, Ozil and had been linked with Silva before he signed for City.

But no! We sign Benayoun!.

He said:
'I am very excited to come to a club like Chelsea, it is a big club and I think it is a dream for every player. Hopefully we will be successful'

Ancelotti said:
'We are happy to have this new player. Yossi has a lot of quality in midfield and can play in lots of positions. I like his behaviour on the pitch and he will do a great job for us next season.'

I will never understand how we can let Joe go and sign Benayoun. We want players who will provide competition for places in the squad, players who will excite our fans.

This is one signing that simply doesn't do it for me!
