Churchills message to England on D-Day

Comments

1939: Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965), British Statesman and Prime Minister for two terms (1940 - 1945 and 1951 - 1955). (Photo by Central Press/Getty Images)

"I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to qualify for the knockout stages, to ride out the storm of critisism, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone.

At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of my England team-every man of them. That is the will of the players.

The England Staff and the playing squad, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength.

Even though some major sides of Europe and many old and famous countries have fallen or may fall into the grip of World Cup Fever we shall not flag or fail.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in South Africa,
we shall fight on the Pitch,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Goal, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on our box,
we shall fight on in half,
we shall fight their half,
we shall fight in their box;
we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Team and our Empire beyond the seas, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, TEAM ENGLAND, with all its power and might, steps forth to our destiny and we get our hands on the World Cup!"

Come on England!!!!

Substitute Malouda scores as France crash out.

Comments

June 21, 2010 - Bloemfontein, South Africa - epa02214976 France national soccer team player Florent Malouda (L) during the team's arrival at Bloemfontein's airport, South Africa, 21 June 2010. France will face South Africa in their group A soccer match of the FIFA 2010 World Cup on June 22 in Bloemfontein.

Florent Malouda's World Cup nightmare with France is now over after his side were beaten 2-1 by the host nation South Africa. Malouda, who started from the bench, came on as a second half substitute and scored a consolation for France after good work from Sagna and Ribery.

At least he can have a break now and come back fresh for pre-season at Chelsea.

Was John Terry right to speak out?

Comments

The British Press have struck gold in the last couple of days after the John Terry press conference. Fabio Capello has spoken out about the comments made by JT and the Press have been fed rightly or wrongly (in my view rightly) more ammunition in their quest to destroy him and make him the scape goat of the nation if we fail to qualify for the knockout stages on Wednesday afternoon.

Its as simple as that. Some of you would have agreed with JT speaking out, some of you would not have agreed but the fact of the matter is clear and JT decided at that time that things needed to be said.

What he didn't bank on, was the reaction to his comments from inside the England camp, from the Manager and also from the British Press.

Joe Cole IS the answer for England.

Comments

June 21, 2010 - South Africa - Football - England Training - England Team Camp, Royal Bafokeng Training Complex - 21/6/10..England's Joe Cole arrives for training.

There is no two ways about it in my opinion and that is that Joe Cole MUST START for England on Wednesday!. We all watched on Wednesday, saw the team lacked a spark, someone creative and saw that Gerrard is nowhere near as effective from the left wing as he is through the middle.

England have had the same problem down the left wing for years, but that was until Joe Cole came into the side on the left and filled the void. Joe has been great for England in that position and ever since he had been injured we have missed him there.

He has back now, fully fit and raring to go. It's obvious that Capello needs to play Joe on the left in either a 4-4-2 formation, or the favoured 4-5-1 formation.

If it was me, I would play 4-5-1 (which would be 4-3-3 when we have attacking possession) and play the following:

James, Johnson, Dawson, Terry, A Cole, Wright-Phillips, Lampard, Barry, Gerrard, J Cole, Rooney.

I would play Barry in the holding midfield role which would allow Lampard and Gerrard to get forward. I would play Joe Cole and SWP as they both know how to play the 4-3-3 as they learn't at Chelsea under Jose.. Rooney up on his own.

We would be much more of an attacking threat.

Its simple, Joe Cole has to play!.

Anelka sent home from World Cup

Comments

France's national soccer team striker Nicolas Anelka leaves George airport, near Cape Town for the match against Mexico in this June 16, 2010 file picture. A report that troubled striker Anelka had insulted coach Domenech at halftime of a 2-0 defeat by Mexico on June 17, 2010 in Polokwane was the latest sign that life in the France squad was ruined by bickering and scandals. REUTERS/Charles Platiau /Files (SOUTH AFRICA - Tags: SPORT SOCCER WORLD CUP)

Nico Anelka has been sent home after a row with the outgoing France manager Raymond Domenech. Anelka who was substituted at half time during the 2-0 defeat to Mexico was reported as being on the end of a tirade from the manager in the changing room for playing out of position as he went in search of the ball.

Anelka is reported to have responded by telling Domenech to "Go screw yourself!". As a result the French delegation have sent him home from his first ever world cup!.

At least he can have a rest now and remember happier times in recent weeks as you have to say the French look a shambles!

David Silva wants to join Chelsea!

Comments

David Silva of Spain..FIFA World Cup 2010 Group H..Spain v Switzerland..16th June, 2010.

After increasing speculation about the future of David Silva, he has spoken of his desire to come to Chelsea which is great news for us. He said:
"Chelsea have established themselves as one of the best clubs in Europe over the last five years. They might not have the history of Real Madrid or AC Milan but they are creating their own history now. There is no reason why in the future Chelsea can't be as decorated as Real Madrid.

Chelsea probably have, along with Barcelona, the best squad in football and if any player joins Chelsea he knows he is going to win things. In players like John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba they have players who would get into any team in the world and it would be a pleasure to play with them.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Chelsea would be a great club to play for - and a club where I could fulfil my ambition of league titles and the European Cup. The Premier League is still the place to be, no other league in the world has six or seven Champions League quality teams."

Come on Roman/Carlo get the deal done asap!

Like many of you fellow Chelsea fans and England fans in general we are more often than not left wondering why can't Lampard take his form and goalscoring form for Chelsea onto the International stage?.

Maybe its to do with the tactics and formation that England play as we very rarely play the Chelsea 4-3-3 formation. Maybe its because of the role he is asked to play and to make sure under Capello for example in the USA game on Saturday playing next to Gerrard he sat deeper more than venturing forward?.

One thing is for sure Lampard will feel as though he has a performance in the major tournament in him, he is confident enough in his own ability, he knows he can put the ball in the back of net and so I expect Frank Lampard to start showing the world what he can do in an England shirt, starting tonight!.

Fantastic to hear Chelsea want Ozil of Germany.

Comments

DURBAN, June 14, 2010 Mesut Ozil (C) of Germany kicks the ball during a Group D first round match against Australia at the 2010 FIFA World Cup at Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban, South Africa, on June 13, 2010.

Like many of you last week I sat and watched the Germany V Australia game with anticipation knowing that the German's had a younger side without Ballack and to see how they would do. After the game finished I had become very aware of Mesut Ozil.

Ozil had been given the biggun as we like to call it by the press after his season in Germany with Werden Bremen. His performance in that one game proved a couple of things to me. They wasn't going to miss Ballack too much, he has undoubted ability, an eye for a pass and also an eye for goal.

Its being reported in the English press that he has refused to discuss a new contract with the German club and Chelsea are prepared to beat anyone to his signature as we look for a replacement for Ballack. The other thing to note is that apparently Chelsea have been watching him for two seasons now after he first made his move to Werder.

With Chelsea also being reported as interested in Bastien Schweinsteiger and now Ozil it could be exciting times for Chelsea and with the age these two are, its fantastic that there could be a chance of signing them for next season!.

News on the Fenerbache website has today confirmed another departure from the Chelsea ranks. Miroslav Stoch was rumoured to be leaving the club and today its confirmed.

Stoch never really had the chance here at the Bridge to make an impact. Last season he was given the chance with Steve Mclaren at FC Twente and helped them win the league title for the first time with Stoch getting on the scoresheet in the final game of the season.

I wish him well for the future.

There will be much more as Carlo Ancelotti and Roman Abramovich have a clear out this summer.

The Guardian is reporting that Carlo Ancelotti is looking to bring Bastian Schweinsteiger to Chelsea from under the nose of Jose Mourinho. In my view, the 25 year old midfielder who can play left or right, as a holding or attacking midfielder and a set piece specialist is the the type of player we should be looking to bring to the club.

He has a wealth of experience playing for Bayern Munich and has played in total 304 times scoring 32 goals and 59 assists. Schweinsteiger will be a major part of the German side in South Africa and will look to impose his style of play and character on their side in the absence of Michael Ballack. Who knows, after reports today about Ballack, it could be one for the other come the beginning of the new season and I for one wouldn't complain!.

I know its just my opinion and I am sure that some fans will disagree with me (Liverpool fans) but if you look at our squad and players we have available for selection for each game then he will never get a start so whats the point in bringing him to the Bridge?.

I know Joe Cole looks like he is off now after reports that Chelsea have now withdrawn their contract offer for him but how on earth can we look at Benayoun as his replacement?.

DROGBA: Out of World Cup?

Comments

Japan vs Ivory Coast

Didier Drogba could be out of this summers World Cup after reports that he has fractured his arm in a friendly against Japan.

Drogba had opened the scoring in the seventh minute but shortly after was injured in a tackle with Japanese defender Tulio Tanaka.

Drogba left the field holding his right arm. Its looks like Drogba will miss the World Cup but this is yet to be confirmed. Sven Goran Ericksson said:
"It's an elbow injury. How bad it is, I don't know. He had a lot of pain,Of course I'm worried. He's captain and one of the world's best players. It was unlucky. It wasn't bad or stupid. He [Tulio] didn't want to hurt anyone. Football is a game of contact."

We wish Didier well and let's hope its not as bad as it first appears!.

TORRES: Rafa's left Liverpool! Will Torres join Chelsea?

Comments

With the confirmation that Rafa Benitez has left Liverpool by mutual consent I am wondering what will happen next.

Does this mean the likes of Gerrard, Reina and Fernando Torres will leave the club as Rafa's gone and they face a season without Champions League football!?

We have been linked with Torres before this summer and you have to say that if Roman stumps up the cash Liverpool can't afford to turn a big offer down.

Could developments today spark a transfer scramble for the signature of Torres?. With Chelsea offering him a chance to challenge for titles on all front's next season could it be too hard to resist?.

Ibrahimovic meets Carlo? Could he be on his way to Chelsea?

Comments

Club America v Inter Milan

As posted on here on my Chelsea Daily Drivel the other day it was being speculated that Chelsea are interested in bringing Zlatan Ibrahimovic to the Premier League after his agent said:
"Ibrahimovic has never thought that Barca will be his last club, he is like Mourinho, and if you can win everything with Barca you need a new challenge. English football may be of interest, because it would be a great test. Everything depends on the club."

Now its reported that Carlo and Ibra are staying in the same Miami hotel and are speaking over a possible transfer to Stamford Bridge!.

Joe Cole off to the Arsenal?

Comments

Rumours are circulating today that Joe Cole is about to sign a three year contract to join Arsenal.

I must admit, I never thought that Arsenal would be able to afford Joe's wages after his supposed wage demands at Chelsea (£120K per week).

If the rumour is true then Arsene Wenger has got a bargain and let's face it would suit Arsenal's style of play.

It just makes us all wonder, if Joe is signing for Arsenal and has lowered his demands then why not re-negotiate with Chelsea?.

I guess we can only speculate, but it seems that Joe has become increasingly unhappy at playing a bit part in Chelsea's season and doesn't believe he will have a chance of first team football at the Bridge under Carlo.

Comments

Sports News - May 27, 2010

Surprising news today that it looks like (if rumours are to be believed) that Miroslav Stoch could be leaving Chelsea to sign for Turkish giants Galatasary for approx 2.5 million.

I thought like alot of you that Stoch was highly regarded by Chelsea and had high hopes for him as part of our future but it seems that with the report in todays Mirror, that this isn't the case and after a successful loan spell at FC Twente where he won the league title, Galatasary are keen to get him.
