Chelsea V QPR : The Return of Joe Cole?

Comments

So tonight we take on local rivals QPR in the Carling Cup in a competition that many make us favourites for this season. There is no doubt that the team that take to the field tomorrow will be a lot different to the side that started against Spurs at the weekend but most importantly of all it could and should be the return of Joe Cole!.

Joe has been out of the game and the team since he was injured in the FA Cup game at Southend last season and you could say has been itching to get back involved and tomorrow is the ideal opportunity. With Chelsea already stating that they will be resting players and possibly playing some of the youngsters it will be Joe's opportunity to show Carlo Ancelotti what he can do.

Joe has always said about his favourite position being behind or just off the front man or front two and with the 4-diamond-2 formation we have adopted under Ancelotti, he could be the link we have been looking for. Lampard doesn't seen to be as effective in my eyes just behind the forwards at the point of the diamond and Deco has shone there against Sunderland in particular so the door is wide open for Joe tonight.

It will be interesting to see how long he does play. Being a local derby and a game thats always contested 100% the worry is that someone will "put one on him early" and it will be important to see how he comes through something like that. But Joe Cole is Joe Cole and if anyone can dribble past an on rushing defender then its him!

In a quote taken from the Independant online this morning:

Ancelotti's assistant Ray Wilkins revealed yesterday Cole is itching to play in Chelsea's new-look narrower midfield. Wilkins said: "He calls it the 'sausage roll'. 'Am I going to play in the sausage roll – in the hole?' That's Joe. But it's nice to see he's bubbling. He's firing at the moment. It could be perfect for him. The system Carlo is playing now, Joe understands we're not playing with wide players at the moment. We're playing 'inside'. I think he'll be thrilled about that."
So it looks as though the scene is set tonight and let's hope he gets through the game ok. But what about the rest of the side? Well Fabio Borini was given a taste of the Premier League and will no doubt feature again tomorrow night. But who else will make the grade come kick off? I am not too sure that too many will. Will JT or Lamps start tomorrow (who never like to rested or miss out on a game) or be rested? Will Chelsea use the remainder of the squad who haven't had a look in especially Daniel Sturridge fresh from a hat trick in the reserves last week?.

QPR will be up for the game and will be looking to cause an upset. There is no place for nerves tomorrow night if the youngsters do play. QPR are always waiting for games like this, even their players let alone their fans and let's hope that the fireworks remain on the pitch! Yeah right!

Tomorrow we will see just how serious Ancelotti is taking the competition, let's hope that he soon realises that we can't afford to slip up against QPR as for some this is just as big a game as Spurs!

With the Carling Cup game against QPR hahahahaha coming up on Wednesday, we’ve also got a special guest in the guise of a QPR fan to give us the ‘view from the away end’. Drogba : It was only Cramp!

Comments

So there was us on Sunday afternoon fearing the worst about Didier Drogba and a possible absence from the first team when it turns out it was just CRAMP for god sake! On a good note it means that he won't miss any games but you have to say at times on Sunday it wasn't good watching him dive around and go down. Even John Terry went over to him and told him to pull it together and stop doing it. Once he did he was exceptional.

The cramp I have personally suffered with stops you in your tracks for a couple of minutes etc at the most and not to the point where you need stretcher bearers come out and carry you off the field. For someone so strong and powerful on the pitch I still wish at times he would reign it in and get on with the game!

At least he is ok (if selected) for tomorrow and Wigan away at the weekend!

Chelsea 3-0 Tottenham

Comments

Stamford Bridge, London. Sunday 20th September 2009. Barclays Premier League. Chelsea 3-0 Tottenham. Scorers: Cole, Ballack & Drogba.

Well I was calling for three points at the Bridge yesterday by any means, even a scrappy 1-0 win would of done me but the boys went out there and put Spurs to bed as early as the 63rd minute when Drogba made it 3-0. It was again another fine performance by Chelsea who continued to show their class on the pitch and the quality we have for this season's title charge.

Chelsea are demonstrating these days a patience in their play. Gone are the days of get the ball forward as quick as possible in a more or less hit and hope fashion. The play is controlled, passing is crisp as we knock the ball about from left to right to look for the killer ball or the opening for the likes of Drogba and Anelka to latch onto.

Yesterday was pretty much the same once more. Tottenham had their chances and for me started off the better yesterday. With chances for Defoe and Huddlestone that forced Cech into saves in the first half we certainly didn't have it all our own way. Added to that Jermaine Jenas shot just wide after Anelka had lost the ball whereas he should of done better. Lampard has more or less a half chance as Anelka broke down the right and swung a deep cross into the box where Lampard rose above three Spurs defenders to head wide under pressure. Jose Bosingwa came closest out of anyone to score when his shot from the right hand corner of the box beat Cudicini and smacked the crossbar and bounced clear.

Drogba started the game by being outmuscled at the back by Bassong and Ledley king which forced him to come alot deeper or out wide to get himself some space and this is where Chelsea made the breakthrough. Drogba was given the ball out wide right and his pinpoint ball across the back four of Spurs was met by the unmarked Ashley Cole to get ahead of Corluka and head home from six yards at the back post. It was the cross of the game and once more Ashley Cole is showing all of us that he is back to his best. He took his goal really well and thats now two in two home games in the league for Cole.

No changes at half-time as both sides looked to get on the ball early at the start of the second half and dictate play. Then shortly after the re-start the ball was played into Drogba who's first touch into the left channel as he spun King took him to the edge of the box where he played the ball back to Lampard and he shot well wide when a simple side-foot home would of been better. Maybe he was under pressure but you will all agree with me when at the time we probably all thought "How did he miss that!?". As Drogba spun out wide on the turn to make the chance Ledley King collapsed on the pitch and smacked the turf and to me this could be curtains for the former Chelsea target.

Then the major talking point of the game occured. Robbie Keane broke free down the left wing and into the box, Carvalho came across to make the tackle and looked like he just clipped him, Keane took another step and went down as Cech came out to parry the ball at Keane's feet. At first in normal speed it looked like a penalty but as the reply showed I think the referee saw Keane take another step before he went down and that was his downfall. Keane ranted at the ref saying well if its no penalty show me and a yellow card and after the game Harry Redknapp said the same thing but to his credit Redknapp agreed the Keane was too honest and tried to stay on his feet. I agree with Redknapp, if Keane had gone down as soon as he was clipped you have to say it was a penalty.

Soon after Chelsea made it 2-0. Bosingwa and Anelka combined down the right wing and Anelka's cross was chested up in the air first time by Drogba who volleyed the ball on the spin down to Cudicini's near post, he blocked it wide and Lampard reacted first, cross it back for Ballack under pressure from Bassong to tap home from 2 yards.

By now Chelsea were on top and Drogba was having things his own way once more. He scored his 99th goal in a Chelsea shirt in the 63rd minute to make it 3-0 on the day when Ashley Cole saw his run off Corluka (who was moved inside to centre back when Hutton came on for King) and popped a long ball over the top to Drogba who's pace took him past Corluka easily. His first touch was sublime and as Corluka got back to make a challenge as Drogba got inside the box, he played the ball against Drogba's ankle and the ball deflected off Drogba's ankle and round the outcoming Cudicini and Drogba followed up and to slot the ball into an empty net and that was game over.

Bassong had a nasty fall and smacked his head on the turf which looked like he was knocked out sparko, Palacios shot wide after Crouch (on for Defoe which I will never understand) headed down and Cudicini made a great save from a volley by Mikel late on and as the ball spurned underneath him managed to react quick enough to parry away for a corner. On a sour note Didier Drogba swung wildly to shoot from distance and injured his knee in the process and had to come off.

Chelsea saw the game out and it was another great win for us. Of course there will be debate about the penalty decision which is to be expected but its simply a case of that extra step that Keane took which in the ref see's that there wasn't enough contact made initially and that's why he never gave it.

There were once more solid performances all over the pitch yesterday with Cole the stand out performer and Drogba following just behind. It will be interesting to see how bad Drogba's injury is. With QPR in the League Cup this week I don't think he would be playing or starting anyway so let's hope that in time he will fit for next weekend. Cole was outstanding and is looking the real deal more and more in a Chelsea shirt. I can't actually say that anyone was below par and who cares anyway, we beat the Spurs 3-0 and thats all that matters!

CAREFREE & KTBFFH!

Chelsea v Tottenham: The Preview

Comments

This afternoon at Stamford Bridge Chelsea take on Tottenham which is our biggest test of the season so far. We have made it 5 out of 5 so far in the league and Spurs were on course but slipped up at home last week, and with a week a no football, will be keen to come to the Bridge and beat us.

Chelsea's last defeat in the league was to Tottenham and like all Chelsea fans nothing hurts more than a defeat to that lot. It was nice to read this week that Carlo Ancelotti asked JT and Lamps about the biggest derby of the season, biggest games of the season and straight away they said "Tottenham" so Carlo is aware of just how big this game is today.

Harry Redknapp has added fuel to the fire today by stating that Chelsea will never be a "Man Utd" because of their history and stadium etc etc and I am sure all the boys need today is that article pinned up on the board in the changing rooms to give them that added motivation.

Getting back to the game today and Chelsea welcome back Didier Drogba and Jose Bosingwa after their bans prevented them from playing against Porto. Joe Cole and Paulo Ferreira are now raring to go so we should be pretty much full strength. Its just a doubt about Deco and Zhirkov is still injured.

These games are always spicy and today will be no different. The main battles will be in the midfield today. With our diamond formation against their natural width it will be a test today of just how good and flexible our formation can be. There is no doubt that Spurs will look to Aaron Lennon today and up against Ashley Cole it will be another key area in the game.

For me the key area for us today is up front and Didier Drogba. Drogba who is just 2 goals away from his century of Chelsea goals has started the season flying and with a weeks rest he will be all guns blazing today. If Didi is on song today then it will be a long day for the Spurs back four. Along with Nicolas Anelka up front fresh from scoring the winner against Porto, it could be a good day today for Chelsea.

Like most teams that come to the Bridge, they will look to sit back and soak up the pressure and hit us on the break, but we look fit and sharp this season and this has had bearing on the season already with late winners against Hull and more recently Stoke. It could be a tight game and another case of grinding them down so we have to maintain possession today and make the ball do the work. As long as we get on the ball and make them chase the ball around the pitch they will get tired and we can hit them where it hurts.

With the Manchester derby on before us, its another game where we have to take advantage of our position in the league and make sure we get the three points. Right now, I can take a scrappy 1-0 and three points as this can be the weekend where we open up a more comfortable gap on the rest of the league.

So its good luck to the boys this afternoon. No matter how we get them, we need three points today. COME ON CHELSEA!

On the show this week we discuss the last minute win against Stoke and look forward to the Porto and Spurs games. Some Spurs related songs in “We’re out to show the world the way to sing” and more questions answered in “Dear Mart” and your posts in “You’re on CFFC”!

Chidge, Mart, Chris and Ross discuss our deserved but last minute victory against the Potters on Saturday. But, no matter, that’s why we’re Champions! The game against Stoke looked more like a 2 falls and a submission result rather than 2-1with Stokes somewhat agricultural tactics. We award our Man of the Match, Guinness and Celery Moments. Will Drogba make it 4 out 5 Man of the Match wins?

We look forward to our first Champions League match of the season on Tuesday against Porto – who we seem to play as regularly as Liverpool and Barcelona, and even further ahead to next Sunday’s encounter at the Bridge against a small club living on their ancient history who play at Shite Hart Lane. All in all one of our favourite games of the year – can’t wait!! Appropriately, Chris warms us up for the Spurs match with a couple of classic Spurs related songs from the terraces in “We’re out to show the world the way to sing!”

We announce the winner of our “Chelsea Here Chelsea There” competition and one lucky listener is the winner of the book signed by Kerry Dixon, and also the book’s authors: Mark Worrall, Kelvin Barker and the legendary David Johnstone, who of course were on the show last week. We’ve only just recovered. If you haven’t heard it yet, download it from Itunes or Football FanCast and you’ll understand what I mean!

No Chel Tel this week, so we’ll have to wait for another edition of Chel Tel’s Classic Years. Rumour has it that he is stuck in his attack having been almost buried alive in an avalanche of programmes from the ‘80’s. We’ll be sending out a search party if we don’t hear from him in a day or two!

Martin most definitely does another bumper edition of “Dear Mart” and finally Chidge looks at what you lot have been saying on “You’re on CFFC”

Chelsea 1-0 Porto

Comments

So as we had all hoped for Chelsea got their first three points of the group stages in the Champions League last night at home to Porto in the torrential rain last night!! A solitary goal from Nicolas Anelka was enough to take the points but you have to say we were far from comfortable on the night.

Credit where credit is due, Porto are a good side and created a host of chances and but for Petr Cech we could of been looking at a whole different story. Overall Porto had the greater possession in the game with 54% to 46% and had an equal share of shots on goal and on target so we had to work hard for our win.

At times we looked sloppy and looked dodgey to say the least and with the last five minutes or so with a mentality of hoof the ball clear it wasn't the normal calm and composed side of Chelsea we have become so used to.

But the weather last night had a major effect on the game. But, after all we got the three points with a well taken goal from Nico just after the break. To be fair he should of put it away first time, but the rebound was a great finish! We missed Bosingwa and Drogba last night, especially Drogba as it looked as though we didn't really have an "outball" for someone to hold the ball up and trouble the Porto defence. Sometimes balls into the channel for Anelka do not work and last night was one of them.

Like I have said when is all said and done, its a massive three points for Chelsea considering the other game ended in a draw so we sit two points clear at the top of the group. It wasn't pretty and it was a bit heart in mouth but Carlo got his first victory as Chelsea manager in the Champions League and we move onto the next game!

Breaking News - Kenyon's leaving

Comments

Breaking news from chelseafc.com:
"Chelsea have announced today that Peter Kenyon will be leaving the club in a full time capacity from October 31. He will continue to work as a non-executive director and represents Chelsea on various Uefa and European Clubs Association Committee's.
He said:
"I am extremely proud of my time at Chelsea and of the friendships I have forged with everyone here. When I joined Chelsea it was an incredible challenge and together with all the staff, players, the board and Roman, I think we have really built a club, in short space of time, that can be in the forefront of European football for many years to come. That is a major achievement"
"I am also delighted that our relationship is not ending and i can continue to make a contribution to keeping Chelsea in that position and to go back to visit friends. I intend to take a little time off before considering what i do next but i am certain i have one major challenge left in me. I would like to wish Chelsea the best of luck for the rest of the season. I am sure Carlo can lead the team to great things!"
So its happened. Its been speculated about for some time after the stand that Roman took when he sacked Scolari while Kenyon was away. There has been rumour that he wasn't party to the agreement when Mourinho's contract was terminated and also about Frank Arnesen. One thing is for sure though when you look back. He made a bold statement when he came to the club about putting Chelsea right up their with Europe's elite and you being honest you have to hold your hands up and say he has done just that!

All the best Pete!

Chelsea v Porto match preview

Comments

Tonight Chelsea take on Porto in the Champions League. Carlo Ancelotti will take the reigns as Chelsea coach for the first time in the Champions League competition and tonight he has a weakened squad to choose from. Didier Drogba and Jose Bosingwa are both banned following the outcome of the Barcelona enquiry last season. Joe Cole, Paolo Ferreira, Yuri Zhirkov & Deco are injured so youngsters Borini, Bruma and Hutchinson are drafted into the Squad.

Tonight is chance for Chelsea to get a win on the board and an important first three points but as usual in the Champions League it will be no easy task. Like alot of teams in the Champions League that come to Stamford Bridge, they will look to get men behind the ball and more or less say to Chelsea "break us down" and so it will be a difficult game for us tonight. Chelsea have established a reputation over the last 6 years or so with us being in 5 semi finals in the last 6 seasons so we are now "big fish" in the competition.

Chelsea have to get good possession of the ball early, get their passing game going and look to play the killer ball in behind their back four for Anelka and possibly Kalou (if he starts with two up front tonight) to run onto and create space. I have no doubts about our quality at the back and in midfield tonight with Carvalho coming in for Ivanovic at centre back with Ivanovic moving to right back to cover the banned Bosingwa and more or less the same midfield that started against Stoke on Saturday.

Its a must win game as every home game is in the Champions League. I can honestly say that with the way we are playing at the moment that it should be three points for us tonight. You have to say that as long as we keep disciplined, keep our focus and pass the ball around the pitch and look for the openings we will be ok.

With Drogba out it will be interesting to see what Ancelotti does tonight, will he blood Danny Sturridge fresh from his goal for the England Under 21's last week or maintain the experienced line up or Anelka and possibly Kalou. Ideally we want to hit the ground running tonight and get 2 or three and take some players off and rest them ahead of the weekend. But as we all know when it comes to Champions League and the aura that surrounds match nights at the Bridge it could be a long time wait for the goal to take three points.

One thing is for sure, when i am sitting here writing my report on the game tomorrow I want to be writing about the first solid three points in the group and not how we let points slip!

Keep the faith and let's get the three points!

Character see's us through once more

Comments

Ok so another Florent Malouda goal saw us nick the points from Stoke in the dying minutes once more but you have to say it was enough to see us through and put us three points clear at the top of the league. Spurs slipped up against Man Utd so it was a chance we had to take and we did.

I won't say alot at this stage about the goal we conceeded as it looked as though as soon as it happened Cech knew it was his fault. How many times to you see someone from the opposition head into an empty net against Chelsea? Hardly ever ! Plus not only that but our marking seemed awful to allow the free header in the first place.

Now I didn't get to see the whole game as I was moving house, but from the highlights it seemed as though we kept digging away at the opposition and created more chances than they did. Looking at the official stats from the game it shows that they only had two shots on target & two off target in the whole game compared to our 18 shots in total with ten on target and that in itself tells its own story.

Chelsea battled away and some might say we can't see how on earth we didn't put to bed the three points earlier but we battled back and it was stunning goal from Drogba that put us back on level terms. A cute ball with just the right amount of pace from Lampard played Drogba in and his left foot rocket-shot beat the keeper all ends up and made it 1-1.

It wasn't until into injury time once more that Malouda fired in the winner (which i thought, even though he was wrong footed, the keeper should of done better with) that the keeper couldn't handle but we dominated the game in the second half. A Robert Huth header just over the bar was the nearest that Stoke could muster but it was all Chelsea.

Malouda struck and we took home the points and broke Stoke hearts once more. Some say it was last-gasp, some say we were lucky, some say well deserved but Ancelotti says

"We got what we deserved because we tried to attack all the time. I am very happy because it was a difficult game. We maintained good control throughout the match and that was important. We applied a lot of pressure and were rewarded for our play. We know all about Stoke and were not surprised by the way they play. We were ready for a physical match and knew how to deal with the long ball. To be top of the league is very important. We have good confidence in our play and a very good atmosphere in the dressing room."
So we are top of the league after another fightback and gutsy win at not the easiest place to go. It shows we have a togetherness about the place, real character in the squad and a will to win that you never know will define just how long we stay top of the league this season!

Chelsea aim for Ten straight at Stoke

Comments

So today Chelsea travel to the Britannia Stadium looking to make it five out of five this season and for ten straight wins in the Premier League following on from our fantastic end to last season.

Today we are without Deco who got injured in midweek during the International break, Zhirkov, Joe Cole and Paulo Ferreria as they are still working back towards full fitness. Everybody else is fit and available to play.

One thing about today's game is that there has been the break, players have been away and Carlo has only had two days to work with the players to prepare for today but still, you have to say, we should be too strong for the big spending Stoke today.

I was reading Stoke's fan website www.whydelilah.co.uk (Good site by the way) and one guy on there has written a post about our game their last season. He mentions that be their own admission, Chelsea were the only side to stop Stoke playing last season at the Britannia and they are in the Premiership to play games like this one today. Which i thought was a real honest opinion because let's face it we did!

I expect more of the same today. It may take us a while to get back into our stride which is no real surprise after the players being away, but you have to say whoever plays today should be too strong and we should get another three points. With Arsenal playing City and Spurs playing United this weekend its a chance to open a gap at the top of the table and with games like this one today its important that we do.

The most impressive thing so far this season has to be how we have dominated and controlled games. Imposed our passing game on the opposition and ground them down. I can see us continuing in this vein today with Drogba, Lampard and Anelka looking to score goals.
We will have to keep our discipline though as the long throw's will be something we have to handle. But we did it effectively enough last season and we should be able to stamp out the threat they can pose us today.

I can see the back four remaining the same along with Cech as the Burnley game. I can see Mikel maybe coming in for Deco alongside, Essien, Ballack and Lampard and Anelka and Didi up front. Let's hope we can take control of the game, get a decent couple of goals and make some changes with the Champions League game in mind this week.

So for me, once more, its three points for Chelsea as we march on!

What other Strikers defend as much? - Drogba

Comments

Didier Drogba when away for the International game made a comment that made me think the other day. He said:
“I often sacrifice myself for the good of the team,” said the former Marseille man. “I don't look at my scoring statistics. Have you ever seen any other great striker do as much defending as I do?”
At first I laughed to myself and thought Drogba is back to his old tricks of once away with Chelsea makes some sort of statement to get the press cogs everywhere churning into action. But then I thought about it and he is right!

Countless times since he has been at Chelsea he is there in our own box defending corners and making important clearing headers away from danger, ok i know once or twice he leaves his man to our cost, but in the majority he has a point.

How many other forwards do you know or are aware of that have the same impact at each end of the pitch? They might get back to make up the numbers but I certainly don't & can't recal anyone else being as effective as Didier.

So Didier its hats off to ya! Your our Super Attacker who Defends in the time of need for 2009!.
(seriously keep doing it as we need you back there!)

The Chelsea Here, Chelsea There special – The Chelsea Football FanCast 86 available to download now

We celebrate the launch of the new book “Chelsea Here, Chelsea There” written by Chelsea terrace stalwarts Mark Worrall, Kelvin Barker and David Johnstone, recalling the momentous day on August 25th 1984 when Chelsea celebrated their return to the first division and the big time by taking over 20,000 away to Arsenal

A copy of the book signed by Kerry Dixon, and the boys is up for grabs in our “Chelsea Here Chelsea There” competition.

In the big news of the week, FIFA have slapped Chelsea with a 2 transfer window ban for inducing Gael Kakuta to break his contract with Lens. We ask whether this is another case of the powers that be ganging up on the Chels or are Kenyon and Arneson to blame. How will it affect Chelsea’s ability to compete and doesn’t it all sound rather ‘proper Chels’ with our usual ability to shoot ourselves in the foot just when things are going so well.

Just like Chelsea in 1984, Chelsea FanCasts very own legend, Chel Tel, is most definitely back with a new series called “Chel Tel’s Classic Years” where he recalls a season from his and Chelsea’s illustrious past. No prizes for guessing which season he’ll be featuring today!

Martin will be doing another bumper edition of “Dear Mart” including answers to questions on how to get your girlfriend to like Chelsea, most disappointing Chelsea match, Chelsea’s top 3 prospects and what is the difference between inducing and tapping up.

And finally, Chidge looks at what you lot have been posting on the Facebook Group on “You’re on CFFC” with all your reaction to the FIFA transfer ban

Chelsea youngsters to step up for the League Cup

Comments

So with all the press coverage of the FIFA statement that came out the other day and Chelsea considering their appeal, its put a slant on the focus of the Carlo Ancelotti for this coming season. Chelsea are known to field their strongest sides in the League Cup ever since Jose Mourinho came to the club in the 2004/5 season when we went onto win the competition. With the FIFA ruling and the possibility of an outcome to our appeal not being heard and decided upon until maybe the end of the year for the first time in a good few seasons, Chelsea's attitude to the competition could be about to change.

Ray Wilkins has been reported to of said:
"The Carling Cup is big for us, but I think this year, for one of the first times, we will use some of the younger players in the club".
"Hopefully we will get a full house against QPR and if some of the young players can force their way in, well all well and good!".
To me this is great news but don't get me wrong their could be drawbacks and it go against us bearing in mind its a London derby and a big game for both clubs so god forbid the plan fell apart and we crashed out. But, if we focus on the positive this could really work well for us and for the youngsters.

There is no doubt that part of Roman Abramovich's vision along with building the excellent training facilites we now have at Cobham was to see more "John Terry's" coming through the Academy. He has invested money into the youth structure of the club and the ban, for the youngsters, can be a blessing in disguise.

Of course there will always be the detractors and people moaning or commenting on the fact that hardly anyone since John Terry has come through. Our players are with our Academy for a few seasons, loaned out and then sold off or released, but this ban (if it goes through) will open the door to the likes of Mancienne, Sinclair, Di Santo, Stoch, Cork etc.

Don't get me wrong I am not saying they will walk straight into the First Team but to be in and around the squad and involved in games will only benefit Chelsea in the long term.

So, the first door that has been opened will be QPR in a week or so and its the first chance of many to come so let's hope that the youngsters realise the opportunities that they now have and grab them and follow the example of John Terry.

Lampard surprisingly breaks silence on FIFA ban

Comments

Somewhat of a surprise today is Frank Lampard speaking out on the FIFA ban that we have all done nothing but read and hear about over the last couple of days and I have to say its great to finally hear someone saying something positive to the press about the situation.

I know the club is taking a stern line on this for obvious reasons as they are preparing to appeal and contest the decision of FIFA but the fact that Lampard has now come out and spoken of the situation, it gives the press something else to chew on which as we all know will rumble on..
Lampard has said to the press:
"A lot of things have happened to me in my career with England and Chelsea and whenever it’s backs to the wall, for whatever reason that might be, it brings a togetherness and can be used as a positive. You certainly can’t let it be used as a negative. It’s something that is out of the players' control anyway so all we can do now is make it a positive. It's a question that certainly shouldn't just involve Chelsea. We all want to see good English kids coming through. I played in the West Ham first team at 17. But there was nowhere near the quality there is at Chelsea now."
So Lampard has backed the youngsters we have at the club and this is maybe the ideal time for Chelsea to bring them through. This along with the togetherness and spirit at the club which as that has been on display so far this season looks as strong as ever.

Robben sticks the knife in

Comments

Well it didn't take very long did it for an ex-player to come out and have "their" say about the situation we are faced with at the moment with FIFA. But it was surprising for me that it was Robbie. Of course you would come to expect someone to come out and have a "pop" at us but thought it would be one of the players that left he club on bad terms or something, but I was always sure that Robbie wanted to move on with no hard feelings.

Robben has said over the last few days that he "fears a mass exodus" now from Chelsea by players who do not have a long term connection with the club and straight away you initially think "thats bollocks" but is it really?.

Ok so at the moment we are faced with a possible two window ban which will take us to Christmas next season but let's hope that after the official appeal we will be making to the Court of Arbitration we could be looking at just this window coming up at the end of the year.

I have said before on here time and time again that I believe we have the strongest squad and the most quality of the depth of our squad that do we really need to bring anyone else in at all?. I don't think that January will be a major threat to us if we are not allowed to do business in the window at all. The African Nations players will go away for a month (Drogba, Kalou, Mikel & Essien) but look at the games we have during that time. We have Hull (A), Sunderland (H), Birmingham (H) and Burnley (A) which to me should be a problem at all. We have quality in our squad and with the likes of Joe Cole and Zhirkov to step into midfield I do not see this being a problem at all.

The question remains about if we are to be banned next summer. There is no doubt and a geneal consensus that we have a ageing squad so it will need to be replaced. As with any summer some players will move and with us possibly not being allowed to register new players this would be an ideal opportunity to blood the youngsters and intergrate more of them into the First Team squad.

So in answer to Robben statement I don't agree with this at all. We are tight bunch these days. We have the strongest squad in the Premier League (with others still to return from injury) and the strongest squad depth so one or two may leave next summer, but for now the ban will not affect us as much as the press and former players are making out it will!.

The press go to town on Chelsea

Comments

No sooner had the story of the Fifa Ban broke this afternoon, the written & online press stepped into action about Gael Kakuta and Chelsea.

The Sun online ran an article stating that the Lens President accused Chelsea of "stealing Kakuta when he was 16 and stated 95 times out of 100 its always English Clubs.

The offside.com has run a story stating "Didn't anyone tell Chelsea, Don't mess with Karma" stating that the fine seems to fall a bit short for a club that has taken such "high moral grounds in the courtroom recently". They also add the the fine should be higher, maybe 17m euros payable directly to Adrian Mutu.

The Daily Mail, Guardian and the Mirror delve into "Chelsea's dodgy transfer dealings", "Diary of transfer disputes" and "Chelsea have got previous". They each look at the transfers of Frank Arnesen from Spurs, Ashley Cole from Arsenal, John Mikel Obi, Michael Woods, Tom Tiawo, and of course Gael Kakuta.

The Timesonline takes a different approach to the news today with their article "Let's shed no tears for Chelsea" by stating "Let one aspect be made clear, this should not seriously affect the club's chances of winning the Premier League and Champions League this season". But then goes onto explain that Adrian Mutu was sacked and is faced with a £15m bill for compensation for breech of contract. It states "If Kakuta was induced , it is a serious matter that goes well beyond the relatively trivial offence of tapping up or sounding out people about whether or not they would fancy a move".

To me it seems as thought the press are just waiting for that carrot to be dangled in front of them for them to chomp at the bit to get their teeth into Chelsea. Today is no different and this is one that will rumble on and on. Chelsea of course have said in their statement that they will be appealing against the situation we find ourselves in with Fifa but you have to say that no positive outcome can be taken from this situation.

Roma were found guilty of encouraging Phillipe Mexes to break his contract with Auxerre after they had refused his contract. They were fined 7m euros, Mexes was banned for six weeks and Roma were also banned for two registration periods which was reduced to one after appeal.
You have to say that this looks like the best possible scenario for us now (one registration period and not two) and we have the players to cope with this situation.

Of course the powers that be at Chelsea will not let this rest until impossible to get any further but I simply can't see this being a 100% positive outcome.
Of course there are arguments that he is only a youth player, but Platini and Sepp Blatter will make the most out of this one in my opinion but you have to say that surely we aren't the first and won't be the last. Its reported that United are now being looked at after their dealings with a player from Le Harve.

Its us that are being made a meal out of, being dragged through the gutter once more and you do, as a Chelsea fan, have to ask the question: Are we guilty? If so who is to blame here?.
Alot of the focus of attention will come to Frank Arnesen's door as at the time was in charge of youth recruitment at the time of Kakuta's arrival at Chelsea. No doubt his dealings will be the focus of attention now in the press and the media and you can imagine Roman will be fuming as he see's "his club" being dragged through the mill once more.

I am getting all sorts of messages through today from different Chelsea fans and one person has suggested that heads should roll after this. But like I have already said I'm sure (if found guilty) we aren't the first and won't be the last. Do you guys think heads should roll now at Chelsea ?

Like alot of you today when I heard the news, I thought two things. Firstly that they will be making an example out of us because of our owner and who we are. Also that if this ban and fine goes through after appeal, they would of set a precedent now and I can promise you there will be plenty of clubs that will have their dealings looked at with a fine tooth comb by FIFA.

Its not just with youth players either. Look at the way Real Madrid have dealt with transfers and possible signings who are still contracted to other clubs. Man City and the way that Mark Hughes has gone about signing certain players, for example Lescott from Everton. This could seriously explode and have a snowball effect within the European game.

One thing is for sure, right now its us that are taking the flack, the press have jumped on the anti-Chelsea bandwagon once more and right now we are right there for the taking!

Chelsea's Response to FIFA

Comments

Chelsea have made a statement in response to FIFA's ban as reported earlier today. It reads:

"Chelsea will mount the strongest possible appeal following the decision of FIFA's Dispute Resolution Chamber of Gael Kakuta. The sanctions are without precedent to this level and totally disproportionate to the alleged offence and the financial penalty imposed. We cannot comment further until we receive the full written rationale for this extraordinary arbitrary decision"

Chelsea banned from transfers till Jan 11.

Comments

Chelsea have been banned for the next two transfer windows by FIFA. The statement on the FIFA website says the following:

"On the occasion of its last meeting held on 27 August 2009, the Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) was called to pass a decision in a contractual dispute opposing the French club Lens to the French player Gael Kakuta and the English club Chelsea. The French club had lodged a claim with FIFA seeking compensation for breach of contract from the player and requesting also sporting sanctions to be imposed on the player and the English club for breach of contract and inducement to breach of contract respectively.

The DRC found that the player had indeed breached a contract signed with the French club. Equally, the DRC deemed it to be established that the English club induced the player to such a breach.
As a result the player was condemned to pay compensation in the amount of €780,000, for which the club, Chelsea, are jointly and severally liable, and sporting sanctions were imposed on both the player and Chelsea in accordance with art. 17 par. 3 and 4 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players.

A restriction of four months on his eligibility to play in official matches has been imposed on Kakuta. Chelsea are banned from registering any new players, either nationally or internationally, for the two next entire and consecutive registration periods following the notification of the present decision.

Furthermore, the club, Chelsea, have to pay Lens training compensation in the amount of €130,000"

Chelsea at the moment are considering their response to this statement but you have to say this will hit Chelsea hard come next Summer. I think we will be ok this season as I have said about our squad time and time again but this will be a major blow if it stands next summer.
Lets see what Chelsea come back with in response to this statement issued by FIFA.

Chelsea can win Quadruple - Kenyon

Comments

Its been reported in one the British Newspapers today that Peter Kenyon thinks that with the current squad we have along with our new signings that we can with everything this season. He said:

"I think there's been alot of emphasis around football on transfers, but we've got the players we wanted. We've been quiet!. When I look at Didier Drogba, John Terry and Ashley Cole, they would walk into any other team in Europe. Carlo's made a big impact already, he's an experienced coach, he's done it as a player, done it as a coach. I think we can win everything. The reality of that is there is an added edge. I was with John Terry at the Champions League draw, walking past the trophy - he wants to lift it. That's the desire we've got at Chelsea"

So is he right and jumping on the band wagon that surrounds us at the minute because of our good start to the season or are we to be wary after what happened at the start of last season. For some reason I just have a much better feeling about this season and about our current squad than I did last year. The players are together, fighting for each other, working hard and looking fitter so you have to say I can see no reason why we can't go close again.

But, we do have that nagging doubt about the teams we have totally outplayed this season and won 4 out of 4. They are not really the strongest teams we will come up against in the league and thats no disrespect to any of them. The sterner test will come in the coming months with some big games ahead. The League Cup maybe a different story depending on Carlo's mentality on how he wants to approach the competition.

For all foreign players / managers that come to our shores are aware of the importance of the FA Cup and I see us playing strong teams in the competition throughout and the same with the Champions League. So in answer to Kenyon's claim about this season, on paper you would have to say we have a great chance, but you have to admit that others do too and will stand in our way in more than one competition this season.

Its a little bit early to be getting carried away you have to say. But let's keep the faith and you never know in football. As someone said once, "Its a funny old game!".

Champions League squad announced.

Comments

Chelsea have submitted their 25 man squad list for this season's group stages of the Champions League. The 25 players listed are:

Petr Cech, Branislav Ivanovic, Ashley Cole, Michael Essien, Ricardo Carvalho, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Didier Drogba, John Mikel Obi, Michael Ballack, Florent Malouda, Jose Bosingwa, Yury Zhirkov, Deco, Saloman Kalou, Ross Turnbull, Daniel Sturridge, John Terry, Alex, Juliano Belletti, Nicolas Anelka, Henrique Hilario and Sam Hutchinson.

You have to admit this is an amazingly strong and experienced squad that we have named. Strength in depth which will play a vital role if we are to progress to the latter stages in most of the competitions we are looking to win this season.

Shaun Cummings moves on.

Comments

Today it has been confirmed that youngster Shaun Cummings has left Chelsea and has signed a permanent deal with Reading. Cummings will link up once more with Brendan Rogers who was recently appointed as the new Royals manager after his stint at Watford.

Shaun was one of the unlucky ones who never made it into contention for the first team during his time at Chelsea since the age of 12. He progressed through youth and reserve levels but never made the first team. To me this seems like its a good deal for both clubs concerned. Shaun has spent the last couple of season out on loan and the step to Reading will give him some stability and I would like to wish him well for the future.

Ashley Cole new deal next for Chelsea

Comments

Well if the rumours are true Ashley Cole is the next key player at Chelsea to sign a new deal after John Terry and Didier Drogba. This is fantastic news as far as I am concerned as after a shaky start to his Chelsea career and all the stories about Jose' trying to get him to the Bridge in the first place, and subsequent fines, he has bedded in, worked hard and is now one of our most consistent performers week-in, week-out.

This season he looks as if he is really back to his best and a goal on Saturday against Burnley goes to show it!. Its been reported that the likes of Man City and Barcelona were interested in him but he has always said he wants to stay at Chelsea.

Its pleasing to see that he has settled now at Chelsea and has found his form. I know the Arsenal fans still will always call him Cashley Cole or things like that but to me he seems as though its never about the money. He has his reason for leaving Arsenal and for me it was a good deal. He started to show his quality in a Blue shirt last season and has carried on in that vein this season.

John Terry has made no secret in his desire for the futures of the key members of the squad to be tied to the club and to be around him for the same period of time and Ash will have all that confirmed in a couple of days.
For me there is a really good feeling about Chelsea at the moment. The players are together, they are all singing from the same hymn sheet and important contracts have been signed. I can see Ashley Cole and the Chels holding aloft more and more silverware come the end of the season and you never know, there just might be a World Cup in the offing too!
Indeed Chelseafc.com has now confirmed that Ashley Cole has signed his new deal.
