Time to Focus on Fulham

Comments

On Saturday Chelsea entertain Fulham in the Premier League with an eye on getting revenge for the late equaliser in the sides 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage earlier in the season.

Chelsea have no new injury worries ahead of the game and its another chance for Chelsea to keep the pressure on Liverpool and Man Utd at the top of the Premier League.

Will Guus Hiddink rotate some players who didn't feature much against Barcelona on Tuesday? Will he keep the same players and look for continuity? Will he rest Key members of the side?

Full match preview and key area's that will influence the game to feature on my Blog tomorrow so bookmark this site and make sure you come back and read it and post a comment if you agree or not!.

Mikel to sign new deal

Comments

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel is set to agree a new five-year contract in the summer and end Inter Milan's hopes of signing him once and for all. Mikel has enjoyed his best season for Chelsea since he joined the club from Lyn Oslo in 2006.

The Nigerian international opened talks over a new deal at the end of last year but they were then put on hold.

Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho, who was in charge when Mikel arrived at Stamford Bridge, had hoped to capitalise by making a big-money offer to take him to the San Siro.

Mourinho is looking for a replacement for Patrick Vieira and reports in Italy claimed he was prepared to offer the 22-year-old £60,000 a week to make the switch to Serie A.

Mikel, who still has two years left on his current deal left to run, is understood to earn around £40,000-a-week at the moment.

But Chelsea are determined to keep Mikel at the club and are expected to match the offer Inter were reportedly planning.

Mikel's agent, John Shittu, said: "We are now discussing the renewal of the contract. There has been interest from different clubs in Spain and Italy, not forgetting some big teams in England, but John will remain at Chelsea.

"For the time being his only concern is to ensure his position with the Blues and until he has done that he will go nowhere."

Mikel showed his growing maturity in Chelsea's 0-0 draw with Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final, first leg at the Nou Camp on Tuesday. It was his 42nd start of the season, which is already 14 higher than the personal best he set in the last campaign.

He played a significant role in helping Chelsea nullify Barca's much-vaunted attack after being picked by Guus Hiddink to play alongside Michael Ballack in front of the back four.

British Press this morning

Ancelotti story again.
It has been reported in the British Press that Carlo Ancelotti has moved a step closer to becoming Chelsea manager in the summer after Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi (above) has admitted he is already searching for a new manager.

At the minute there are all sorts of stories about Ancelotti, one day he is going to be our new manager, another day he is denying the stories. This one will rumble on till the end of the season.

Xavi blasts Chelsea and the Referee.

Barcelona are furious with the conduct of Chelsea's players following the 0-0 Champions League draw at the Nou Camp.

Xavi says: "There was a team that wanted to play and there was a team that didn't." Referee Wolfgang Stark also comes under fire for snubbing a penalty and failing to award cards for bad tackles. "It's an outrage. There were scandalous incidents," Xavi adds.

Let's just say on this one that Barcelona got wound up by Chelsea because they couldn't break us down and so the likes of Alves, Yaya Toure and the others started to look to get players booked. They should of been prepared for a physical battle rather than moan about it in my book. The only player that should of been booked was Ballack.

Afterthoughts - Barcelona 1st Leg

Comments

So last night the blue boys held Barcelona to a 0-0 draw and became the first side this season to stop them scoring at home which is no mean feat considering Eto'o, Henry and Messi have scored 90 goals between them this season.

But was it a good result for us with the second leg in mind? Now we know what we need to do at the Bridge. We need to score and keep a clean sheet. If they score then we need to score two so its important that we score first next Wednesday night.

I thought at times we were too defensive, we sat too deep and allowed Barcelona to gain possession and create. The one thing i will say is that we mainly restricted them to long range shots which Cech was comfortable with and when he was called up he was outstanding.

Yes they missed a sitter towards the end when Bojan headed over the bar but apart from that and the block from Eto'o, we were comfortable in the second half.

Drogba in my mind should of scored in the first half when he got onto the fluffed back pass from Marquez and should of placed the ball rather than go for power. But i still believe we will score at the Bridge and a couple at that.

I thought Bosingwa did really well with Malouda in marshaling Messi as Messi was quiet. JT and Alex did well against Eto'o and Ivanovic after a shaky start did well against Henry. I was however, slightly gutted about our midfield and how deep they played. Now don't get me wrong here, Defensively they were fantastic but we should of pushed on more like we did at Anfield.

I thought because of how deep we played we left Drogba isolated for the majority of the game and we were left with Cech playing long balls upto him from goalkicks hoping he will able to win the ball and bring the midfield into play but this never happened. So as a result our possession was wasted and more often than not they just got hold of the ball and attacked us again.

By the end of the game i had enough of Dani Alves and all his play acting and trying to get people in trouble. I think if he tries it at the Bridge there will be a different attitude towards him from the referee. The good thing is that Marquez is injured and Puyol is suspended for the 2nd leg and this is key and where we will be able to attack their weakness at the back.

All in all i am happy with the 0-0 last night. But again would of liked us to of played higher up the pitch and supported Drogba a bit more. Let's hope it happens in the second leg.

Come on the Chels!

Match Report: Barcelona away CL Semi 1st Leg

Comments

Barcelona vs Chelsea

Chelsea drew 0-0 with Barcelona in the Champions League first leg at the Nou Camp last night which some will say is a good result, some will say is a bad result but we managed to become the first side to stop Barcelona scoring at home this season. Full match report here:

Chelsea make some changes to the starting eleven that played West Ham on Saturday. The team is : Cech, Ivanovic, Alex, Terry (C), Bosingwa, Essien, Lampard, Mikel, Ballack, Malouda and Drogba.

Chelsea Kick off.

First minute of the game and Chelsea play their passes about the midfield and back four, ball ends up passed back to Cech twice to thump clear.

1st min. Barca play ball down left hand side and Henry runs at Ivanovic who brings him down in the left channel on edge of 18 yard box. BARCA CHANCE. Free kick comes in to far post, Cech flaps, Eto'o heads back across goal from 3 yards and Cech caught out of position rolls across goal towards back post Ivanovic swings and misses his clearance altogether and Marquez reacts too late and flicks wide but Eto'o called offside.

3rd min, CHELSEA CHANCE. Cech clears towards left hand sideline and Malouda under pressure from Alves controls and turns him 25 yards from byline plays ball square just outside box to Essien who plays ball into Lampard's path first time and Lampard curls towards far post and goes well wide.

Obvious at this early stage that when Chelsea are not in possession of the ball they are playing a flat 4-5-1 formation. Both wingers tracking back so we form two lines in front of Barca player in possession. A line of 5 in midfield and then our back four after that.

9th min. Barca have ball in the centre circle. Eto'o plays ball into left channel for Henry, who picks up ball 10 yards from the byline and passes back to Iniesta outside left edge of box. He plays to Messi.. first chance to run at Chelsea and he is blocked off by two players as he tries to play it past them, Chelsea clear.

11th min. Barca possession and cross comes in from Abidal and Cech off his line dives to his right and palms clear on the corner of his 6 yard box.

12th min, Messi runs at Bosingwa who chases him and dives in the tackle right hand side of box & he does win the ball, Messi goes down and free kick Barca. Messi over hits it straight out of play.

16th min. Alves is played in behind Bosingwa and Malouda and slides a cross across the 6 yard box, cleared by Alex.

17th min. BARCA CHANCE. Iniesta has ball just passed centre circle middle of the pitch plays into Xavi 20 yards out and lays off first time to Eto'o who spins onto the ball and is shut down straight away by Ballack and drags his shot wide.

BALL POSSESSION STATS ARE SHOWN BARCA 65% CHELSEA 35%. Chelsea sitting deep alot now.

19th min. BARCA CHANCE. Alves plays ball into Messi who comes inside from the byline, he plays into Henry who is backing into Alex on edge of box. Henry takes a touch and tees it up for the oncoming Messi who fires high wide and handsome from 20 yards.

23rd min. BARCA CHANCE. Possession in midfield for Barca. Ball comes to Iniesta just outside box left middle and he has a cross shot well wide.

25th min. BARCA CHANCE. Messi cuts inside and 30 yards out in centre of the pitch, skips passed a tackle by Alex. Messi goes over (did Alex touch him?) free kick Barca. Alex booked. 25 yards out dead centre of the pitch taken by Xavi and deflected over the bar for a corner. Corner comes in half cleared, falls to Messi who's shot is deflected for another corner. Nothing comes of it and cleared.

27th min. BARCA CHANCE. Alves has ball wide right 35 yards out, plays ball into Xavi middle of pitch 25 yards out and as he is closed down again he fires wide.

28th min. Ball played into Henry left hand side and Ballack dives in and half catches him. Henry goes down and Ballack is also Booked.

30th min. BARCA CHANCE. Xavi plays long diagonal ball over the top to Henry who chases it down. Picks ball up left edge of Chelsea box, comes inside and shoots hard and low towards Cech's near post. Cech down to save easily.

33rd min. BARCA CHANCE. Messi cuts inside with the ball 35 yards out and tries to flick a ball over the top to the on rushing Iniesta. Half blocked. Iniesta picks ball up just inside left edge of box and plays back to Henry who again shoots hard and low down to Cech's near post and Cech makes a great save for a corner. Nothing comes of it.

36th min. Iniesta goes down easy middle of the pitch. Barcelona players are complaining. Yaya Toure give his "advice" to the referee to show and yellow card and gets one himself from the referee. Yaya Toure Booked.

38th min. CHELSEA CHANCE. Ball played down line by Malouda on half way line. Drogba chases down Marquez who fluffs his back pass to Valdes. Drogba onto it like a flash and fires hard towards goals from 18 yards. Valdes saves as its straight at him and Drogba onto the rebound. He tries to flick it over Valdes but he palms it away with the help of Pique. Best chance of the half so far.

42nd min. Drogba picks up ball 30 yards out and takes ball past Marquez but is forced wide of goal, he gets into the box and loses his footing and goes down. No Penalty and wasn't one.

44th min. BARCA CHANCE. Yaya Toure has ball 35 yards out and holds of Mikel. Plays ball square to Iniesta who shoots at goal from 35 yards and easy for Cech to save as its straight to him.
HALF TIME. Good solid half for Chelsea who no doubt had the best chance of the game through Drogba.

Barcelona get us started for the second half & no changes for either side.

46th min. Chelsea have started well again. Ball played to Malouda who takes on Alves. Alves brings him down. CHANCE CHELSEA. Drogba crosses from left edge of box and Ballack wins the flick header 6 yards out over the bar!.

49th min. Ball played to Marquez on half way line in plenty of space. All of a sudden with the ball at his feet he collapses as knee buckles. His game is over. BARCELONA SUBSTITUTION: PUYOL ON FOR MARQUEZ.

57th min. Pique plays diagonal ball over the top to Alves coming in from right hand side over Terry, Alves chests it down as he takes it into the box and Cech's off his line like a flash and parries ball.

59th min. CHANCE BARCA. Corner for Barca taken by Xavi long past back post 10 yards from byline and Messi strikes it on the volley well wide.

60th min. CHANCE BARCA. Barcelona possession ends up with Dani Alves right hand corner of box who fires at Cech and he stands up and blocks the shot pushing the ball away at the same time. Good save again Cech.

66th min. CHANCE BARCA. Lampard fouls Iniesta 25 yards out dead centre. Free kick Barca taken by Alves over crossbar.

69th min. CHANCE BARCA. Ball played into Eto' just over halfway line and spins Alex . Terry comes to close him down, Eto'o flicks ball past him and heads towards the box. Alex tracks him all the way. Eto'o gets into box and feigns to shoot. Alex dives in and sells himself short. Eto'o cuts inside and shoots. Cech is off his line on the left hand corner off his 6 yard box and blocks the shot for a corner. Great save again Cech! Corner comes in headed well over by Pique.

70th min. SUBSTITUTION CHELSEA. BELLETTI ON FOR LAMPARD. Essien comes in from the right into the middle of midfield and Belletti on the right.

74th min. Puyol fouls Drogba and is booked. He misses the 2nd game next week.

80th min. CHANCE BARCA. Iniesta is played inside the left hand edge of box and gets to byline and hits a cross shot which is saved and pushed away at near post by Cech again. Corner to Barca comes to nothing.

81st min. BARCA SUBSTITUTION. BOJAN ON FOR ETO'O.

86th min. BARCA SUBSTITUTION. HLEB ON FOR HENRY.

5 mins stoppage time.

90th min. BARCA CHANCE BEST OF GAME. Ball played out to Alves who crosses from 25 yards out and Bojan unmarked heads over from 6 yards out.

92nd min. BARCA CHANCE. Hleb picks up ball on left wing inside his own half and carries ball into Chelsea half. Plays into Iniesta who plays to Xavi and flicks back down left wing between Ivanovic and Alex and Hleb come onto it at edge of box. Hiddink hails Cech for saving the game!

Comments

Guus Hiddink praised Petr Cech as having "saved the game" for Chelsea last night as his team's tenacity and refusal to wilt frustrated Barcelona and ensured the Londoners became the first side this season to emerge unscathed from the Camp Nou.

Not since Manchester United secured a goalless stalemate in this arena at the same stage of this competition last season have the Catalans failed to score at home, with Cech denying Thierry Henry, Samuel Eto'o, Daniel Alves and, deep into stoppage time, Alexander Hleb to preserve the visitors' clean sheet.

"Petr did his defensive job very well and saved the game for us," said Hiddink, who was also impressed with the manner in which Jose Bosingwa filled in against Lionel Messi at left-back. "When you look at Barça's recent history, this is the first time they've not scored at home [this season] so it's quite an achievement against a beautiful team who can play beautiful football, as we saw at times tonight. We rather neutralised Messi tactically tonight, even if that's no guarantee that it will happen twice [for the return].

"We needed to be very courageous, but you need to play with intelligence too. You can't get a result against Barcelona just with courage alone. In that respect, John Terry was an inspiration for us too and an example to the rest of the team, who responded in a very good way. We have to play better in possession, but that's also down to the opponents. But this team has a lot of courage and a lot of blood that they want to sacrifice. Mentally, we're a very tough team."

Chelsea's discipline rarely cracked for all that Barcelona revelled in their customary possession-play. "They had a lot of possession but we stayed very tight," said Terry. "They like to play little balls through and we knew that and stopped them doing it. It's a fantastic result and we go back to the Bridge ready to go again. We'll have home advantage so, hopefully, we can make the most of that."

While this tie remains on edge, Barça must face Real Madrid in a critical Liga tie at the Bernabéu on Saturday and will travel to Stamford Bridge for next week's second leg without the suspended Carles Puyol and Rafael Márquez, whose season was ended by a knee injury. Their coach, Pep Guardiola, complained that the referee, Wolfgang Stark, should have been stricter with Chelsea's more physical approach but felt his side would be "stronger" in the return leg.

Frank Lampard "Don't waste another chance!"

Comments

Frank Lampard has told his Chelsea team-mates they can't afford to waste any more chances to win the Champions League and urged them to go for victory against Barcelona in the first leg tonight.

Chelsea are in the semi-finals for the fifth time in the last six years but have yet to win the trophy.
They take on Barcelona in the first leg at the Nou Camp rated as outsiders to make it through to their second final in a row
.

Chelsea are planning a mass overhaul of the squad in the summer, with five key members of the first team, including Michael Ballack, Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho, aged 30 or above.

Lampard is another member of the post-30 club and is worried the current team are running out of opportunities to win European football's biggest prize. He said: "We crave success and we have basically achieved everything else domestically. Europe is the one that is always hanging over us. The more years that it comes and doesn't happen, you wonder will I ever?

"You don't feel it all the time but in big games like against Liverpool in the quarter-final, when you know you could be going out, that's when it really kicks in."

The England international can't wait to take on the Spanish League leaders and hopes his team-mates approach the match in the same way as they did the first leg of their quarter-final against Liverpool at Anfield, where they ran out 3-1 winners.

He added: "We certainly don't have to win but there is a huge emphasis on away goals now. That's the attitude we took to Liverpool. We have to learn from that game and take it to Barcelona. If we get an away goal, then we will have a good chance at Stamford Bridge."

Ancelotti Snubs Chelsea

Comments

Ancelotti delivers snub to Chelsea by insisting he will stay with Milan

Carlo Ancelotti has ruled out taking over from Guus Hiddink as Chelsea manager next season.
The AC Milan boss has been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge but revealed he will remain in charge of the Italian giants next season and has no intention of leaving Serie A.
And Ancelotti admitted he is already working on strengthening Milan's squad in a bid to challenge city rivals and runaway league leaders Inter.

'I will stay for at least next year and we are already working to strengthen the squad,' Ancelotti told Messaggero.
'[Talk of Chelsea] is a refrain to which we are accustomed and it will probably run again, but that is no problem.'
Chelsea are looking to bring in a new boss at the end of the season with temporary manager Guus Hiddink walking away in the summer.

Ancelotti was appointed as head coach at San Siro in 2001 and led to the club to the Serie A title in 2004 and the Champions League in 2003 and 2007.

Match Day

Comments

So it's match day today and probably like you all i am hoping the boys do well tonight. It's a strange one this one because we have all seen how good Barcelona can be. But, like I have said in my preview yesterday if there is anyone that can beat Barcelona then it's us.

But as we are Chelsea fans we probably all have thought the worst about tonight. I would say the worst case scenario for me will be to come away from tonight with a one goal deficit. Not that i am being a defeatist at all its just the worst case i would hope for.

I can also see us coming away from Barcelona tonight with a good result. I was watching Chelsea TV last night and do you know that we have ALWAYS scored a goal at the Nou Camp in the years we have played there!. I am confident that we will score again there tonight.

Let's hope its another Liverpool at Anfield 1st leg performance and result tonight!
Come on the Chels!

Time to Focus on Barca the Preview

Comments

Tomorrow night Chelsea travel to the Nou Camp to take on arguably the best club side in the world at the moment in the Champions League Semi-Final 1st Leg. This is another massive game for Chelsea and you have to say this is the biggest game of our season so far.
Chelsea come into the game after a 1-0 win against West Ham on Saturday with a weakened side at Upton Park and Barcelona come into the game after a 2-2 draw at Valencia (They were 2-1 down with 10 mins to go!)

This is the biggest test for Chelsea this season and the World will be watching. One thing is for sure we need to be up for it from the start to finish tomorrow night and can't afford to let anything slip if we are to progress to the Final. Of course as usual i can see some key battles tomorrow that will have a major effect on the game but they are all over the pitch in this one. So let's focus on all 11 players:

Chelsea's back four v Barcelona's front three.

I fully expect Chelsea to line up from right to left as Ivanovic, Alex, Terry & Bosingwa tomorrow night up against from right to left Henry, Eto'o & Messi. This is going to be a difficult night for our boys so we have to make sure we are alert and on the ball from the off. I am quite happy with Ivanovic up against Henry. We all know Henry likes to cut inside from the left wing and his pace is a danger but i am confident with Ivanovic and his pace he has to burn. Also the danger of Henry cutting in from the left will be dealt with as its more than likely he will be faced with Alex if he does come inside.

Eto'o up against John Terry and Alex is ok as far as i am concerned. I think the two of them can marshall him quite well but it will be upto Essien to stop the ball being played between them two for Eto'o as his pace will be the main threat in the game. Eto'o is another of the "whingers" in the game. If he doesn't get alot of the ball his head will drop and he will start to complain at his players. Let's hope this is the case tomorrow night.

The main concern i have is Bosingwa against Messi. Now i think all true Chelsea Fans will be well aware that although Bosingwa is good getting forward from the back, defensively he is a worry and not the strongest defender. Its important that Bosingwa bullies him early, closes him down asap and let's him know he is there. If Messi gets in the game early his confidence will grow and he will become a major player in the first leg.

Chelsea's midfield three v Barcelona's midfield three.

I predict Chelsea's three in midfield will be in a triangle formation with Lampard at the focal point behind Drogba. So it will be Essien next to Ballack and Lampard in front of them. They will be up against the defensive minded Yaya Toure, and Xavi and Iniesta playing in front of him.

I think this is where we will win or bust against Barcelona over two legs. I watch Spanish football now and again and i do not see any side with the midfield strength and power Chelsea have in Lampard, Ballack and most importantly of all Essien. I am happy with Ballack and Essien up against Inesta and Xavi. As long as they win their tackles, shut them down and make their physical presence felt early i think we can cope with these two. They are lightweight and skip past midfielders in the Premiera in Spain but against Ballack and Essien its going to be alot different. If Ballack and Essien get amongst them, and get ontop of these two early then we can push Barcelona onto the back foot.

Lampard up against Yaya Toure is a no brainer for me. Lampard is playing much more advanced these days under Guus Hiddink and will be much more of a goal threat than Xavi and Iniesta put together. Mark my words Barcelona are just as worried about Lampard as they are Drogba. There is no doubt Frank will be up for this game as he always is and if he gets on the ball early and finds his time and space between the midfield and defence of Barca then he will have a field day. Its upto Toure to negate him and his possession and i just think at this moment in time Frank is far superior in their battle tomorrow night.

Chelsea's front three v Barcelona's back four.

I also predict Chelsea will line up from right to left with Anelka, Drogba, Malouda up against from right to left Dani Alves, Puyol, Pique & Abidal. Malouda up against Dani Alves is another one. Is Alves as good defending as he is getting forward? I don't think so. Malouda has been inspired lately and if he can put him on the back foot like he did against Liverpool in the first leg this will be good for Chelsea. Barcelona will be forced back and Chelsea will dominate possession.
Add Image
The same can be said for Anelka up against Abidal. They both are French team mates and will know each others game well but i don't see Abidal posing the same threat down the wing as Dani Alves and I see this playing right into Anelka's hands. Granted i have said recently that Anelka is wasted on the wing and doesn't look comfortable playing there, but he has a nack of popping up with a telling cross for Drogba in the big games and let's hope its the same tomorrow night.

Drogba v Puyol & Pique. Didier on form will scare the life out of anyone on his day and these two will be no different. Pique couldn't make the Man United squad and has walked straight into the Barcelona team which tells you something. In the last rounds he was up against a different kind of forward in Luca Toni who is a different player to Drogba. I haven't see Pique being tested yet and tomorrow he will face the biggest of his life in Drogba. Puyol will play as the sweeper and Pique the marker. I can see Didier causing Pique all sorts of problems which will see Puyol play closer to him and this where the gaps will open up in their defence.

Barcelona's defence is suspect and they aren't the tallest side in the world. We need to put them under pressure asap in the game and make sure we make our set plays count tomorrow night. Against Valencia at the weekend Valdes came out for a corner and flapped at the ball and missed it totally. We need to expose his weakness.

If there is one side that can go to Barcelona tomorrow night and win its the Blue Boys!
COME ON THE CHELS!

Here is a video (with no sound of the last game Chelsea played at the Nou Camp a 2-2 draw. Who can forget it !

Afterthoughts - West Ham

Comments

Well i have to say i was happy and relieved to get the three points yesterday. Its not easy in the Premier League making changes and bringing in players who haven't featured or have been injured especially away from home. But the boys got the job done and dominated the game from start to finish.

It was nice to see the players that came into the side pick up the mantle straight away and slot right into the side. Frank was superb again as we all know he loves his games at Upton Park and always has some kind of influence there.

Its obvious that Essien and Ballack will feature in the midfield with Frank against Barcelona. So it was important that Mikel and Belletti did their jobs yesterday and that they did no problem.

Anelka had a decent game and linked up play well, he had a couple of efforts on goal but to me still lacks his sharpness in front of goal. One player that impressed me and continues to under Guus is Malouda. He was our main danger yesterday. He was playing one-two's linking up with Anelka and Lampard and had a couple of good efforts on goal. But, the main thing for me is that he has the confidence to run at players and take them on. He played as well as anyone yesterday and long may it continue.

All in all it was a good performance from the boys. The penalty was the only blip of the performance but i am so pleased for Petr Cech as he stepped up when we needed him and made a great save.

Another three points away from home for Chelsea! Roll on Barca.

Match Report : (Short) West Ham 0-1 Chelsea

Comments

So yesterday Chelsea took on West Ham at Upton Park with one eye on Tuesday night in mind against Barcelona. Guus Hiddink made some changes to the team for the game yesterday and decided to rest Ashley Cole, Michael Essien, Michael Ballack and Didier Drogba as they were placed in the bench. Alex wasn't involved at all in the squad on match day at all.

So Chelsea took to the field with the team as follows: Cech, Mancienne, Terry, Ivanovic, Bosingwa, Mikel, Belletti, Lampard, Kalou, Malouda and Anelka.

From the off Chelsea were in complete control of this one. They started off well and got into their stride early and established there slick passing game on West Ham. In the early exchanges Chelsea dominated possession with Malouda firing over the bar from outside the left corner of the box high and wide. Chelsea were camped in West Ham's half and again in the 15th minute Malouda was played in on the left and carried the ball inside the left hand edge of the box and his shot went wide just passed the post. Malouda looks inspired these days!

Then on 19 Min's West Ham had the first of their two chances in the half. Kieron Dyer was played in right in between Ivanovic and Terry and was through on goal one-on-one with Cech and Cech came out and made the save. (He should of scored to be honest).

36 minutes in and Anelka picks the ball up 25 yards out and takes the ball forward and fires just wide from outside the box as Chelsea's pressure mounts.

42nd minute and West Ham had their second chance of the game, corner floated in by Noble is flicked down in the 6 yard box and Di Michele gets a flick onto it but its cleared off the line by Kalou.

Half Time.

Second half starts the same as the first half, Chelsea dominating possession.

GOAL CHELSEA On 54 mins Lampard makes run into the left hand side of the box and is played in.. He takes the ball to the Byline and dinks the cross high to the far post. Kalou chest's it down under control and flicks the ball into the top corner. WEST HAM 0-1 CHELSEA.

58 minutes in and high ball over the top finds Lucas Neill just inside the box who is caught in two minds and lobs a ball towards goal but ends up high over the bar.

65 minutes and Ashley Cole (on for Bosingwa) on edge of box plays a one-two with Malouda and Cole fires at goal from 10 yards wide left of the box and ball on the up hits the crossbar and goes over.

69 minutes its PENALTY WEST HAM West Hams BIG CHANCE, Illunga plays a one two with Noble and gets the ball back inside the left hand side of the box towards the byline and his shirt is pulled back by Kalou and its a blatant penalty.

PENALTY SAVED BY CECH. Noble steps up and aims for right hand corner low down and Cech reaches across and makes a fantastic save right in front of the Chelsea faithful.

Based on possession its what Chelsea deserve.

Mancienne off for Ballack and Essien on for Kalou.

82nd min and Lampard fires in a free-kick tipped over the bar by Green.

Chelsea play out the final moments of the game and take another great three points away from home. Yes West Ham should of scored their penalty but overall its a well deserved victory for the Blue Boys!

Preview : West Ham

Comments

So tomorrow the mighty blue boys head to Upton Park after a dire performance against Everton the other night. This again is a must win game and Chelsea need to make sure they have their focus on this game and three points and not one eye on Barca.

The game is one we have to win and there is little doubt that West Ham under Chelsea Legends Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke will be well up for this game. They came to Stamford Bridge earlier in the season and frustrated Chelsea and intend to do the same again tomorrow.

The media focus today and seems to be on the Barcelona game and i think this is a mistake. There is no doubt about it, this is a massive game. We dropped more points at home on Wednesday and we need to make sure we recover quickly and get back into the winning habit before the trip to the Nou Camp.

Rumours are rife in the UK that Guss Hiddink will make a few changes to the Chelsea team tomorrow with the left back position being given particular attention as Cole picked up a knock in training in the past few days so will be an opportunity to try one or two out in that position tomorrow.

The good news is that Jose Bosingwa is back in training for Chelsea. Now its not certain if he will have an involvement tomorrow at some stage but in light of the game on Tuesday i believe he will.

Branislav Ivanovic has been outstanding at right back for Chelsea and warrants a first team spot in my opinion so i am just wondering whether or not he will be asked to do a job at left back in order for Chelsea to keep their threat in the air from set plays.

Its great to hear Guus Hiddink say today that he needs to maintain the focus on the league till the end of the season as we need to maintain our position to qualify for the Champions League without having to go through qualification.

There is even a rumour going around today that Frank won't be playing or Essien. I can see maybe one of them being rested and i think its more than likely going to be Essien for Mikel. I can also see maybe Kalou in for Anelka as i think Anelka will get the nod in Barcelona.

Whatever team Guus selects tomorrow has to go out and get the job done tomorrow no arguments. We need these three points more than ever to keep up the pressure on Liverpool!

Come on the Chels!

Time to focus on West Ham

Comments

Tomorrow Chelsea travel to Upton Park to take on West Ham. Now this is a difficult one to predict on who will play tomorrow with Barcelona on Tuesday in the back of our minds. Once thing is for sure, we still need to keep the pressure on Liverpool to catch them for second and see what happens from there. I predict there will be one or two changes in what is again a MUST WIN game for Chelsea. Full match preview to follow later this afternoon.

Ancelotti - " Already studying English"

Comments

David Beckham has been quoted in the British Press this morning saying that Carlo Ancelotti is in the process of learning English. He said that "When I arrived he was already learning the language and when I try to fix his English language Ancelotti insists on making errors and we end up laughing about it together"

This will surely add fuel to the fire about him becoming the next Chelsea boss. Why else would he want to learn English? What do you think?

Afterthoughts - Everton

Comments

So how are you all feeling about last night. I am deflated i have to say. I honestly thought that with the changes Everton had made that we would take the points last night. But as usual they came to the Bridge and defended with two banks for four in front of their goal and played well. Defended the space and shut Chelsea out last night.

Frank Lampard never really had the space between the midfield and defence he has had in recent weeks and couldn't really impose himself on the game. Anelka was again ineffective last night on the wing and was taken off for Kalou half way through the second half. I have to say in my opinion we should of started with Kalou to freshen things up and play natural width against their full backs. Anelka does a job out there but you have to say apart from the odd cross into Drogba its not alot is it?.

By playing Anelka wide his goal tally in the Premier League has dried up and he now hasn't scored in the league since February. I know this is mainly down to Drogba's return to form but at the moment i just do not see Anelka as the answer.

Another thing that seemed strange to me was a change in formation last night and tactics. Just recently Ballack has played a more withdrawn role in midfield next to Essien with Lamps playing in front of them. But last night that all changed. Ballack started as the holding midfielder and Essien was pushed on with Lampard back to the same formation under Jose and Scolari. I couldn't understand that as we have been scoring goals and playing well in the last couple of games.

The most frustrating thing about last night was that in all our possession we only tested Tim Howard once through John Terry's 35 yarder and hit the crossbar three minutes into Injury time. If anything Everton had three chances in the game and a penalty decision that could of been given after seeing the replay last night and should of taken three points with them.

Did we run out of steam? Did we look tired? This is what some of the British Press are reporting this morning but I for one do not believe that's the case. I think that Everton came to the Bridge to do a job and under David Moyes as usual they did it really well last night and credit to them.

So if we are realistic now the Premier League is out the window but the fight is still there for second place and we HAVE to finish above Liverpool. Let's make sure we get behind the boys as i believe the return of Robbie Keane to Anfield on the last day of the season could haunt Liverpool. Come on the Chels!

Match Report: Chelsea 0-0 Everton

Comments

Tonight at Chelsea's Premier League aspiratons took a nose dive as Everton frustrated Chelsea and held them to a goaless draw at the Bridge. A game that Chelsea dominated possesion but only once forced Tim Howard into one save and Drogba hit the crossbar in the closing stages with a ferocious effort that gave Howard no chance.

Key Match Incidents :

Chelsea line up with the same team that started at Wembley on Saturday. Cech, Ivanovic, Alex, Terry, Cole, Lampard, Essien, Ballack, Malouda, Drogba and Anelka. Subs: Hilario, Belletti, Mancienne, Mellis, Kalou, Mikel and Di Santo.

Everton make four changes to the side that knocked out Man Utd at Wembley on Sunday. Howard, Jacobsen, Yobo, Lescott, Baines, Neville, Castillo, Cahill, Osman, Pienaar and Jo. Subs: Nash, Hibbert, Jagielka, Rodwell, Gosling, Vaughan & Saha.

Chelsea kicking from right to left towards the Shed End in the first half.

Straight away into game its noticeable that Ballack is playing as the holding midfielder and Essien is pushing up next to Lampard. Doesn't look like the same way in recent games with Essien and Ballack next to each other and Lampard in front. Looks like we are back to 4-3-3.

3rd min, throw in for Everton down Chelsea's right. Baines to Pienaar who's cross into the box is headed goalwards by Jo but easy for Cech.

5th min, Lampard plays dink-ball over the top to Drogba into box but he is crowded out by both Yobo and Lescott. Moyes already out on the touchline giving additional instructions to Osman.

7th min, Ball fed to Cahill half way inside Chelsea half, slides through ball between Ivanovic and Alex to on rushing Jo inside left hand channel who picks up ball and heads towards goal. Cech comes off his line to as Jo shoots and Cech blocks with his left leg low down and ball cleared. Great save by Cech.

8th min, Ashley Cole wide left level with Everton's 18 yard line plays inside to Malouda who takes a touch and plays square to Ballack. His shot is half blocked as the ball spins towards the far post and its an easy save for Howard.

11th min, Ivanovic cross into box from right hand side too high for Malouda but he glances the ball onto Drogba left hand corner of box from 10 yards who tries a scissor kick and misses the ball totally!

13th min, Phil Neville is booked for a "challenge" on Drogba. After seeing replay I have to say its a harsh one as not alot of intent in that one for me.

14th min, Resulting free kick into box and Ballack rises and wins header but goes well wide.

16th min, Interchange 30 yards out between Ballack, Essien and Lampard results Lampard hitting one from 25 yards just over as it begins to curl away from the far post.

17th min, Anelka plays a square ball 10 yards inside Everton half who plays forward to Essien 30 yards out. Has time and space and hits one well high and wide!

We are 20 minutes into this game and Chelsea are no doubt dominating this game with possesion but the best chance has fallen to Everton.

22nd min, Osman comes inside and plays square to Pienaar on Everton left 20 yards out left edge of Chelsea box. He takes a touch inside and tries to curl one for the far corner but goes wide.

27th min, Pienaar fouls Essien 25 yards out dead centre. Resulting free kick taken by Ballack curled towards top left hand corner but flies over as dipped too late.

29th min, Chelsea possesion comes to Lampard 30 yards out who hits high wide and handsome!

We are now 3o minutes into the game and still no clear cut chances for Chelsea at this stage.

32nd min, Ball played down Everton left, flicked just outside left edge of Chelsea box to Baines who takes a touch inside the box and Alex comes across and sticks a leg out and fouls Cahill but its just behind him, his takes a touch and spins onto the ball and fires in a shot and Cech saves to his right low down. Another good save from Cech.

41st min, Everton corner cleared by Chelsea and lands outside box 25 yards out. Malouda nicks the ball past Everton player and then wins a 50-50 with Neville and ball spins out towards Chelsea right hand channel. Anelka picks the ball up on the break. Carries ball to 25 yards out down right hand side with Malouda making a run on the left, he crosses for Malouda but Howard comes out and nicks the ball away from him. Chance on the break for Chelsea but again nothing comes of it.

42nd min, Ball breaks to Pineaar inside left for Everton 35 yards out, he slips a diagonal ball through to Jo with Ashley Cole caught out of position. Jo takes a touch as JT comes to close him down and makes a mess of his shot on goal from the edge of the box well wide.

Half time Chelsea 0-0 Everton and Howard still to make a save.

2nd half no changes for either side. Chelsea playing with more urgency straight away.

46th min, Chelsea corner taken by Malouda on Chelsea right. Swung in and Alex rises 10 yards out, wins the header but easy for Howard as its straight to him.

47th min, Ball played to Baines half way inside Chelsea half who runs towards goal, he is forced across Chelsea box left to right by Ivanovic. Lays the ball off square to Osman who crosses into penalty spot to on rushing Cahill who wins the header and its saved easily by Cech.

50th min, Corner for Everton. Played to Pienaar left edge of Chelsea box and he has what looks like a cross shot but floated towards goal and goes over the bar.

53rd min, Chelsea pressure and possesion results in ball being half cleared. Essien onto it, flicks a ball between Lescott and Baines into Everton box for Lampard but Baines gets back and makes the tackle 10 yards out left side on box and thwarts Lampard. Lampard looks to the heaven's as if to say "if only!".

57th min. Ball played down Chelsea right flank to Drogba who flicks inside first time to the on rushing Anelka who takes ball towards right hand side of Everton box. Looks up and hits a cross shot well wide. Thats no goals since February for Anelka in the league and you can see why.

Substitutions: Kalou on for Anelka and Mikel on for Essien. Tactical switch is made and Ballack now pushed up with Lampard and Essien sitting in front of back four.

61st min, Chelsea pressure and possession edge of box cleared by Everton and comes to JT 40 yards out. He takes the ball forward as the Chelsea faithful shout for him to shoot and he obliges and hits one from 35 yards left footed towards right hand corner. Howard saves as he dives full stretch to his left and ball goes out for a corner. First shot that has forced Howard to make a save tonight so far.

63rd min, Cech gathers a cross and kicks the ball downfield towards Malouda up against Yobo and Jacobsen. Yobo attempts the clear the ball on the volley 30 yards out dead centre and misses the ball and his follow through catches Malouda in the face. Nothing given. Again, i have to say i have seen those given!.

68th min Drogba fouled 35 yards out just right of centre. Crossed into Everton box just to the left of penalty spot towards the head of incoming Ivanovic who can see the a ball travel towards him all the way and at the last minute Kalou jumps for the ball and flicks it off the top of his head and takes it off Ivanovic's head and out for a goal kick. That was Ivanovic's ball all day!!

70th min, Kalou dribbles past Baines right hand corner of the pitch and comes inside towards penalty box. Lescott comes to meet him and Kalou hits a cross that hits Lescott on the hand inside the box but nothing given. It was point blank range so i can see why it wasn't given.

73 minutes into the game now and its still only JT's effort on goal that has tested Howard.

73rd min, Pienaar has ball left edge of box and comes inside, plays ball square to Jo who takes a touch and shots high and wide of the bar.

74th min, Ivanovic inside Everton half on right hand side crosses the ball into Drogba just inside Everton box who half controls under pressure from Lescott, ball falls to on rushing Lampard 18 yards out who shoots first time and its blocked by two Everton defenders.

75th min, Lampard plays ball out to Malouda who crosses ball into middle of box 10 yards out and Kalou rises under pressure and head the ball high over the bar.

76th min Substitution: Di Santo on for Malouda. Tactical switch, Kalou wide left of Drogba and Di Santo wide right.

77th min, Long diagonal ball chased to corner flag by Drogba down Chelsea left hand side and he keeps it in. Plays it back to Kalou who feeds Lampard dead centre at the edge of the box and his shot is tame and easy for Howard as he is closed down.

78th min, Ball comes out to Kalou after being half cleared from a corner and he cuts inside left edge of box and aims for top right hand corner but its deflected over the bar by Lescott. Resulting corner comes in and cleared and falls 25 yards out to Lampard who hits it on the volley high and well wide.

82nd min, Corner half cleared by Chelsea falls to Lescott left hand corner of 6 yard box. He shoots and its blocked but spins off defender across the face of the goal and comes to Cahill right hand corner of 6 yard box. He is closed down quickly but shoots thankfully into side netting.

84th min, Break down the Chelsea left hand side by Everton. Jacobsen plays ball square to Cahill in the middle of the pitch 30 yards out who plays onto the on rushing Pienaar who hits it first time 20 yards out and it goes wide past near post.

85th min. Substitution: Jagielka for Jacobsen.

88th min, Di Santo wins ball in box, half chance snuffed out by Lescott and Di Santo goes down inside the box. Nothing given and can't see if any other way.

89th min Ball cleared down Everton left channel inside Chelsea half at pace. Jo running onto it just outside Chelsea box. Cech comes out of box to meet him and heads the ball into Jo's body and wins a goal kick but they both clatter into each other. Cech's got a bloody nose and Jo injured.

90th min Substitution Saha comes on for Jo.

92nd min, Substitution Gosling on for Osman.

93rd min, Ivanovic plays ball into Drogba just inside box just right of centre with his back towards goal. Takes a touch to his left and makes some space to get the shot away on the turn. Sets himself and fires a rocket from 8 yards. Howard is beaten but the ball cannon's off the crossbar and clear of the Everton goal. THAT was Chelsea's chance to nick this one.

Full time: Chelsea 0-0 Everton.

With Man United beating Portsmouth 2-0 tonight that see's our title hopes fade and are almost impossible now. Another chance to close the gap tonight and make up ground the on the sides above us missed. For all the possesion we had Howard only had to make one save and of course we hit the crossbar at the death.

Guus Hiddink has admitted that our title dream is over for this season. This was 2 points dropped tonight which brings the total to 18 points now dropped at home this season and this is where it has cost us this season. The race is still on for second place and i believe we can still catch Liverpool but tonight would of gone along way for us to do so.
